Constantina Diță ( starting under the name of her then husband Tomescu until May 2008 , born January 23, 1970 in Turburea , Gorj district ) is a Romanian long-distance runner and Olympic champion .

She played handball and basketball and was only discovered for athletics in the final year of school. The first international success was winning the silver medal at the European Cross Country Championships in Velenje in 1999 . In the 1999 World Athletics Championships marathon in Seville, she finished 19th.

In 2001 she moved to the USA and finished tenth in the 2001 World Championships marathon . Shortly afterwards, she improved her personal record to 2:26:39 h as fourth in the Tokyo International Women's Marathon .

At the European Athletics Championships in Munich in 2002 , she finished seventh in the 10,000 meter run . In the same year she was second in the Amsterdam Marathon in 2:23:52 h. 2003 followed a sixth place in the London Marathon in 2:23:43 h, a fifth place in the Half Marathon World Championships in Vilamoura and a second place in the Chicago Marathon in 2:23:35 h.

At the marathon of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens she only finished 20th, but in the same year she won the Chicago Marathon in 2:23:44 h and was third in the London Marathon and at the World Half Marathon Championships in New York. Delhi .

In 2005 she set a Romanian record as second in the London Marathon with 2:22:50 h, won bronze at the marathon of the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 and gold at the World Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton and improved her own record by finishing second in the Chicago Marathon at 2:21:29 h.

In 2007 she finished third in the London Marathon.

At the marathon of the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 she pulled away from the competition after 20 kilometers and at times gained a lead of more than a minute. Going it alone earned her the gold medal. At the age of 38, she replaced Rosa Mota as the oldest Olympic marathon winner.

In 2012 she started again at the Olympic Games in London, where she was 85th.

Nicknamed "Pușa" (pronounced Puscha ), the runner is 1.65 m tall and weighs 48 kg. She lives with her son, born in 1995, in Boulder , Colorado , where she is trained by her ex-husband, Valeriu Tomescu.
