In 2002 the district had 387,407 inhabitants and a population density of 69 inhabitants per km².
In 2011 the Gorj district had 341,594 inhabitants, thus a population density of 61 inhabitants per km².

The district has a total area of 5602 km², which corresponds to 2.34% of the area of Romania. Located in the south-western part of Romania, the Gorj district is in the north of the historical region of Little Wallachia, south of the Southern Carpathians . In the northwest of the district there is the Godeanu Mountains (with the Godeanu 2229 m and Paltina 2149 m peaks), in the north the Vâlcan (with the peaks Olsea 1946 m, Straja 1868 m, Arcanul 1760 m and others), the Parâng Mountains (with the peaks Micaia 2170 m, Păpușa 2136 m and others) and the Rotunda massif (1600 m). The three largest rivers in the county are the Jiu (Schil) , Gilort and Motru .
