Harghita ( pronunciation ? / I ) is a Romanian district ( Județ ) in the Transylvania region with the district capital Miercurea Ciuc . Its common abbreviation and license plate number are HR. Audio file / audio sample

The district is named after the Harghita Mountains named and is bordered to the north of the Suceava County , in the east of the circles Neamt and Bacau , in the south of the circles Covasna and Brasov and in the west to the county Mures .

Demographics

In 2002 the district had 326,020 inhabitants and a population density of 49 inhabitants per km². 84.6 percent of the population are Szekler .

In 2011, Harghita County had 310,867 inhabitants, a population density of 47 inhabitants per km².

The district has a total area of ​​6639 km², which corresponds to 2.78% of the area of ​​Romania. In the north-eastern Transylvania, in the historical region of the county Csík located, the Harghita County is located in the Eastern Carpathians in Giurgeu -Gebirge. Furthermore, the north of the district is in the southern part of the Călimani Mountains , the northeast in the southwestern part of the Bistrița Mountains , the east in the western part of the Haşmaş Mountains , the south in the northern part of the Harghita Mountains, the southwest in Transylvania Basin and the west in the Gurghiu Mountains.

Harghita County is the headwaters of the Mureș (Mieresch) and Olt (Alt) rivers in the Hașmaș Mountains and the Târnava Mică (Small Kokel) and Târnava Mare (Great Kokel) in the Gurghiu Mountains .

The largest lakes in the district are Lacul Sfânta Ana (Lake St. Anna , 949  m ) in the Ciomatu massif, Lacul Roșu ( Red Lake , 983  m ), and Lake Ciucaș in the spa town of Băile Tușnad .
