Odorheiu Secuiesc ( Romanian colloquial Odorhei ; German  Oderhellen , Hungarian Székelyudvarhely ) is a town in the Harghita district in Transylvania , Romania .

In dialectical variants the city is sometimes called Odderhallen or Hofmarkt .

Geographical location

Odorheiu Secuiesc lies east of the Transylvanian Basin , in the western foothills of the Harghita Mountains ( Munții Harghita ), a mountain range of the Eastern Carpathians . At the mouth of the Sărat stream in the upper reaches of the Târnava Mare , the Vânători – Odorheiu Secuiesc railway and the Drum național 13A , the city is located about 50 kilometers southwest of the district capital Miercurea Ciuc ( Szeklerburg ).

history

Odorheiu Secuiesc is the cultural center of the Szeklerland . The city was first mentioned in a document in a papal register in 1330, but the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Udvarhely Castle ("Hofstelle") has been the center of the Szekler in the west of the Harghita Mountains since the 13th century .

In August 2005 Odorheu Secuiesc and some surrounding villages were hit by severe flooding.

Attractions

  • The Jesus Chapel does not date from the 13th century, as assumed, but from the 16th century. It is a quatrefoil church, a rare monument of Romanesque style in Transylvania and is a listed building.
  • Haáz Rezsõ Museum
  • Scientific library , the foundations could be laid with book donations from Prince Apafi Mihály and his chancellor, the school founder Bethlen János .
  • Numerous buildings in Bethlen Gábor , Cetății , Kossuth Lajos and Tompa László streets are listed as historical monuments.

Sports

The HC Odorheiu Secuiesc plays in the first Romanian handball league since of 2007.

Odorheiu Secuiesc has partnerships with the Serbian city of Subotica , the Slovak town of Dunajska Streda , and the Hungarian towns of Barcs , Békéscsaba , Cegléd , Hajdúdorog , Keszthely , Tatabánya , Tihany , Törökbálint , Vác and the Budapest districts Budavár and Soroksár .
