The 1st district of the Hungarian capital Budapest lies on the right bank of the Danube . Together with the Castle District , it forms the historical and tourist center of Buda . It is also known as Várkerület ( German "castle district").
Location and structure
The I. District is in the east by the Danube, which separates it from the V district (Belváros-Lipótváros), and in the south by Gellért Hill , the summit of which just outside the district in the XI. District (Újbuda) is limited. In the west it borders on the XII. District (Hegyvidék) and in the north to the II. District . With an area of 3.41 km² and a population of almost 25,000, it is by far the smallest district on the Buda side. In the entire urban area of Budapest, only the outskirts of Soroksár have fewer inhabitants.
The first district is divided into five districts: Vár, Gellérthegy, Krisztinaváros, Tabán and Víziváros. The historic castle district ( Vár in Hungarian ) is located on the castle hill in the center . In addition to the castle palace, it houses numerous tourist attractions such as the Matthias Church , the Fishermen's Bastion and the Burgtheater . In addition, the official residence of the Hungarian President is located here in the Palais Sándor and three embassies. In 2001 the castle district had 2518 inhabitants.
To the west of the castle hill is the district of Krisztinaváros, which extends further into the XII. District extends. With just under 12,000 inhabitants, it makes up about half of the population of the first district. In Krisztinaváros is the Déli pályaudvar (South Railway Station), the third largest railway station in Budapest. In the north of the 1st district and on the banks of the Danube is the Víziváros (water town) with around 9,000 inhabitants, which includes the Chain Bridge and the Burggarten Bazaar .
The two smaller districts Tabán and Gellérthegy are located in the south of the 1st district.
history
The 1st district was created as one of ten districts in 1873 when the cities of Buda , Óbuda and Pest were united to form Budapest. At that time it comprised the districts of Castle District, Tabán and Krisztinaváros. Around 1940 part of Krisztinaváros and some areas on the Danube bank were in the XII. or XI. District outsourced.
