The Fisherman's Bastion ( Hungarian: Halászbástya ) is a neo-Romanesque monument in the Hungarian capital Budapest, built by Frigyes Schulek from 1895 to 1902 . It rises on Castle Hill on the site of Buda's medieval fish market . The name comes from a fishing guild for whom the monument was built. This guild had to defend this section of the city wall in the Middle Ages . The bizarre building, which with its conical towers is supposed to be reminiscent of the tents of the Magyars , is used as a viewing terrace on the Danube and Pest .

In front of the bastion is a bronze equestrian statue of King Stephen I the Saint, who spread Christianity in Hungary . In 1906 it was designed and manufactured by the sculptor Alajos Stróbl . The pedestal of the statue was built in neo-Romanesque style according to plans by Frigyes Schulek. It is adorned with decorative elements that represent the life of the king.

Also in the immediate vicinity is the predominantly neo-Gothic Matthias Church .

Near the church is the Hilton Hotel , which was built in 1976 according to plans by Béla Pintér . The hotel was built on the foundations of two historic buildings. The northern wing stands on the remains of the monastery of St. Nicholas. The wall of the south wing forms the former outer wall of the Jesuit college from the 18th century. The reconstructed Nicholas Tower was erected between the two old parts of the building, with a relief with scenes from the life of King Matthias Corvinus from 1930.

The Andreas-Hess-Platz in front of the hotel was named after the German-born printer Andreas Hess , who ran Hungary's first public print shop in House No. 4 opposite. There is a statue of Pope Innocent XI in the square . which was set up to mark the 250th anniversary of the city's liberation from Turkish rule . The statue, erected in 1836, is a creation by József Demkó . Under Innocent XI. At the time of the occupation of Budapest by the Turks, an alliance against the occupiers was brought into being. The Pope was instrumental in financing the liberation struggles.
