The fifth district in the Hungarian capital Budapest is also known as Belváros-Lipótváros ( German "Innenstadt-Leopoldstadt"). It is located in the heart of the capital and is a center within the city in terms of public administration , economy and tourism .

The district consists of the districts Belváros and Lipótváros and covers an area of 2.59 km² of the city of Budapest (525.16 km²). Around 28,000 of the approximately 1,700,000 inhabitants of the capital live here. The 5th district is divided into six postcodes . The first digit stands for Budapest, the middle two digits identify the district number and the last digit follows a further structure within the district.

The V district is the central district on the Pest side . In the north it borders on the XIII. District , in the east on the VI. , VII. And VIII. District . In the south is the IX. District and in the west the Danube , or on the other bank of the 1st and 2nd district .

history

The area was already inhabited by humans in prehistoric times. The first written records come from Roman times. The fifth district is in Pest , which emerged from a settlement of traders in the 11th century. Under the rule of Matthias Corvinus , the city experienced a high phase in the 15th century. At that time Pest was surrounded by a city wall and could be entered through three gates: the Váci kapu (" Vácer Gate"), the Kecskeméti kapu (" Kecskeméter Gate"), and the Hatvani kapu (" Hatvaner Gate"), which are no longer today are preserved. Under the Turkish rule from 1541 to 1686 the city was almost completely destroyed. After the reconquest of Buda in 1686, Pest quickly regained importance. Outside the city wall, the settlements Terézváros , Józsefváros , Ferencváros and Lipótváros were founded, which eventually led to the demolition of the wall. Since then, the name Belváros has established itself .

In 1838 a flood disaster caused severe damage. In the following years, the Leopoldstadt was rebuilt in the classicist style according to plans by the city architect József Hild .

After the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda in 1873, direct connections to the city center were established with the Liberty Bridge and the Elisabeth Bridge. The Duna-korzó , the promenade, was also built at this time. The newly founded Budapest was originally divided into ten districts, of which the Belváros district initially had the number six, while Lipótváros , which stretched to the border of Újpest , was then referred to as the fifth district.

From 1930 the northern border of the 5th district was Dráva utca . When the former 4th district was annexed in 1950, the border extended to Szent István körút .

Local public transport

The V district is a traffic junction . At Deák Ferenc tér , the M2 and M3 metro lines cross with the Földalatti vasút M1 . The connection to Buda is now ensured by four bridges over the Danube , over which tram and bus routes run. Tram lines also run along the major ring roads at the borders of the district. The ship landing stage at Vigadó tér is a center for excursions within the city, as well as national and international boat trips.
