The IX. District of the Hungarian capital Budapest , which is also called Ferencváros ( German Franzstadt or Franzenvorstadt ), is located on the east bank of the Danube in the former city of Pest .
history
The district emerged in the 18th century as a suburb of the old town of Pest and got its name after the enthronement of Franz Josef Karl as Franz II , last Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire , in 1792 . For the history of the Pest suburbs around today's ring road Nagy Körútca (Great Ring Road), see the eighth district Józsefváros as an example .
District structure, traffic, sights
The IX. District lies between the 5th district (inner city) in the east, the 8th district (Józsefváros) in the north, the Xth district (Kőbánya), the XIXth district. District (Kispest) and XX. District (Pesterzsébet) in the east, the XXI. District (Csepel) in the south and the Danube in the west. The Ferenc körút runs through the district as a section of the Great Ring Road (Nagykörút) , via which the tram lines 4 and 6 of the Budapest public transport company BKV Zrt. with the world's highest passenger volume. The former main and arterial road through the district is Ráday utca , now a nightlife area with many restaurants and bars. Also in the district are the most famous Calvinist church on Kálvin tér and the Great Market Hall and Corvinus University near the Danube on Vámház körút . Since November 2005 the Goethe-Institut Budapest can be found here.
Sports
The district is home to the Ferencvárosi Torna Club , whose football department is one of the most successful (since 2019 with 30 championship titles) and best known in Hungary.
