Újbuda ("New Buda") is the eleventh (XI. District) and most populous district of the Hungarian capital Budapest .

Location and dates

Újbuda is located in the southern part of Buda . In the east the Danube forms the border of the district. In the south lies the 22nd district and in the west Budaörs . The northern neighbor is the 1st district.

The 11th district consists of the following districts, some of which also belong to other districts: Albertfalva, Dobogó, Gazdagrét, Gellérthegy (partially), Hosszúrét, Infopark, Kamaraerdő, Kelenföld, Kelenvölgy, Kőérberek, Lágymányos, Madárhegy, Őrsdorkertő , Péterhegy, Pösingermajor, Sasad, Sashegy (partially), Spanyolrét, Szentimreváros.

history

In 1930, Article XVIII of the law regulates the design of four new districts with the numbers 11 to 14. With the ordinance of the Ministry of the Interior (No. 2130/1930) the law was implemented in the same year. The Kelenföld-Lágymányos area was separated from the 1st district and determined the boundaries of the 11th district. From March 1, 1934 to 1950, the district was named Szent Imre város (Holy Emmerich City).

After the system change, the concern was to give the district a simple name that cannot be confused with smaller districts. The choice fell on the name Újbuda, which goes back to the Middle Ages and was also mentioned in urban planning documents in the 1860s. When the Komárom Railway was built in 1884, the MÁV's predecessor organization referred to the Kelenföldi pályaudvar under this name . Finally, the new name was used for the first time in 1991 in the district newspaper Kelenföldi Híradó . Since 2003, several organizations have started using the name, for example the new Újbuda bus line. The district government determined that the name will also be officially valid from May 29, 2005.

population

Újbuda is the most populous district in Budapest. In 2006, 136,503 people lived there. This makes the 11th district the fifth largest “city” in Hungary .

In this district, unemployment is lowest in Budapest at 1.71%. This has to do with the fact that the proportion of residents with an intermediate or higher level of education is higher than the average in the capital. In 2005, the higher proportion was around 12.8% for intermediate education and around 13% more for high school graduates than in the total city population.

Constituencies for parliamentary elections

Újbuda is divided into three electoral districts:

  • 15. constituencies: Gellérthegy, Szentimreváros and Lágymányos
  • 16. constituencies: Albertfalva and Kelenföld
  • 17. constituencies: Gazdagrét, Kelenvölgy, Őrmező and Sas-hegy

Feneketlen-tó
Gellert Hill

In 2006 there were 71,651 apartments in the district, mainly two-room apartments. Most of the apartments in the inner area were built before 1945. The housing estates in the 16th electoral district date from the 1960s and 1970s, the houses in the 17th electoral district were built in the 1980s.

Újbuda is a relatively green district. There are many parks, smaller mountains and lakes, the banks of the Danube, several springs, two nature reserves, a garden city, as well as an indoor swimming pool and therapeutic baths. There is little industry and a central area with the traffic center. There is also its own hospital, several churches, theaters, monuments and sports areas.

Plans:
After the completion of metro line 4, there are plans to build an artists' quarter in the area of Gellért tér and Bartók Béla út. Some side streets are to become pedestrian zones in order to reduce car traffic.

Local transport

Important traffic routes lead from the 11th district to the west. Most trains in the direction of Transdanubia pass through Kelenföld station. Újbuda is connected to the Pest side by four bridges.
