history

The 18th district emerged on January 1, 1950 from the merger of the districts Pestszentlőrinc ("Sanktlorenz") and Pestszentimre ("Sankt Emmerich").

The area was already settled at the time of the conquest . The first written mention in a document comes from the 14th century. The area was depopulated under the Turkish rule. The resettlement began around 1700.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the master brewer and winemaker Ferenc Mayerffy (* 1776 in Pest , † on September 7, 1845 also in Pest) made a decisive contribution to economic development. Ferihegy Airport is named after him. ( Feri is the nickname Ferenc )

After the defeat of Napoleon , the participants in the Congress of Vienna in 1815 paid a visit to the city. A parade was held on the Szent Lőrinc level for this occasion . The Prussian, Russian and Austrian rulers watched the parade on what is now Gilice tér from a viewing platform. Beside this, the Szent Lőrinc Chapel was built in the baroque style as early as the 1760s . Today it is one of the attractions of the district on Margó Tivadar utca . The observation tower was destroyed in World War II.

At the end of the 19th century the population rose sharply. In 1909 Pestszentlőrinc separated from Kispest . The poorer residents settled in the Péteri puszta , while members of the richer classes such as politicians and scientists built holiday homes in the Lőrinc area. For example, the politician and physicist Loránd Eötvös , the inventor Puskás Tivadar , the biologist Tivadar Margó and the finance minister Menyhért Lónyay had villas in this district. The name of the Puszta Szent Lőrinc Nyaraló train station on the Cegléd - Szolnok line, built in 1875 , also refers to the holiday villas. The station building is still in use today, but it is structurally in poor condition.

Industrial facilities were also built over time. Several brickworks and a gravel works were founded. a. a textile factory. In 1936 Pestszentlőrinc became a county town ( megyei város ), which was decisive for its further development. In the same year, the State Gymnasium Pestszentlőrinc ( Pestszentlőrinci Állami Gimnázium ) was founded.
