The town of Roding borders in the north on the Stamsried market and on the municipality of Pösing , both of which form an administrative community in the district of Cham . history

Roding was first mentioned on September 15, 844 , when King Ludwig the German ad Rotachin issued a certificate, with which Roding can be proven as the royal court of the Carolingians . On August 2, 896, Emperor Arnulf of Carinthia donated the Palatine Chapel of St. Jacob the Younger and St. Pankraz with an attached collegiate foundation . King Heinrich II donated the village of Roding ( Rotega ) to the Hochstift Freising on September 9, 1003 as well as 1002 Palatine Chapel and Collegiate Monastery of the Old Chapel in Regensburg, and together with it on June 1, 1009 to his newly founded Diocese of Bamberg .

The market ( forum ) Roding appears for the first time around 1285 as a Bavarian-ducal property in the land register of the Wetterfeld office and probably came to the Wittelsbach family on September 18, 1261 together with other ecclesiastical fiefs of the Freising monastery .

In 1329 Roding became part of the Palatinate (see Pavia house contract ). Around 1364, Count Palatine Ruprecht I granted the town market rights , and his successor Johann von Neumarkt granted Roding a letter of freedom and privileges in 1432. Roding belonged to the Amberg Rent Office and the Wetterfeld Regional Court of the Electorate of Bavaria . Roding had a market court with extensive proprietary rights. In 1755 a fire destroyed large parts of the city. When Bavaria was restructured in 1803, the Roding district court was set up. After the establishment of the kingdom (1806), the district court Roding was assigned to the Regenkreis in 1808 , which was renamed Upper Palatinate in 1838 . In the course of further administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria, today's community was created in 1818 with the second community edict.

In 1862 the District Court emerged into the Roding District Office, which was renamed Roding District in 1939 . In 1952 Roding was promoted to town and until June 30, 1972, it was the district town of the district, which was then dissolved as part of the regional reform .

Religions

The Catholic pastoral care unit Roding-Trasching exists in Roding. The parish of St. Pankratius belongs to it, as well as the Heilbrünnl pilgrimage church and churches in Trasching, Obertrübenbach and Wetterfeld. In addition, part of the urban area is covered by the Catholic pastoral care unit Neubäu-Walderbach.

The Christ Church of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation was consecrated in 1954 after many evangelical expellees came to Roding from 1945 onwards .

regional customs

Every year in January, on the Sunday after Saint Sebastian's name day (January 18), the traditional Sebastiani procession takes place. The citizens of the city move from the parish church to the chapel of St. Sebastian at the intersection of Schulstrasse and Falkensteiner Strasse. The procession goes back to a plague vow. In 1713 the Rodinger citizens built a chapel and vowed an annual procession to be spared the plague that was rampant in the Upper Palatinate at that time. Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of the city of Roding.

Incorporations

In 1945 or 1946 the previously independent community of Regenpeilstein and parts of the communities of Hochbrunn and Wiesing came to Roding. On July 1, 1971, Braunried, Fronau, Kalsing, Mitterdorf, Neubäu, Obertrübenbach (with the rest of the Hochbrunn municipality, which was dissolved in 1945 or 1946), Strahlfeld, Trasching, Wetterfeld and Zimmering (with the rest of the Wiesing community). On May 1, 1978 Altenkreith was added. On January 1, 2017, part of the former community-free area of Eastern Neubäuer Forest was incorporated.

Between 1988 and 2018, the city grew from 10,449 to 12,081 by 1,632 inhabitants or 15.6%.

The Catholic parish church of St. Pankratius was built in 1959 by Friedrich Haindl on an octagonal floor plan. Only the free-standing baroque tower remained from the previous church.

The oldest building in the city and one of the oldest sacred buildings in Bavaria is the Josephi Chapel from the 8th or 9th century with late Romanesque and early Gothic frescoes; in construction related to this is the first documented in 1580 Anna chapel with a representation of the dance of death .

The Heilbrünnl pilgrimage church, high above the Regen River, is in the immediate vicinity . It was built in 1730 in the Rococo style. In the middle of the nave, the water from the Heilbrünnl spring is collected in a marble basin, which is said to have healing powers, especially for eye problems. The miraculous image in the church is a copy of the icon of Our Lady, the so-called "Beautiful Maria", by Albrecht Altdorfer from the old chapel in Regensburg.

The Strahlfeld Monastery of St. Dominic, the Dominican Missionary Sisters, is located in the Strahlfeld district. The ruins of Schwärzenberg Castle , which dates from the twelfth century, are located on a rock of the Bavarian stake in the Strahlfeld district . The Wetterfeld castle ruins in the district of the same name are not only one of the few real moated castles in the Upper Palatinate, they are also special for another reason: After the castle was sold piece by piece to farmers in the 19th century, the village center developed within the castle walls.

The memorial, consisting of a wooden cross and three memorial plaques above the Wetterfeld district , commemorates the 567 concentration camp prisoners who were formerly buried here on a death march of the Flossenbürg concentration camp . They were among the more than 3,000 prisoners who were driven towards Dachau by SS guards in April 1945 . In 1957 they were transferred to the Flossenbürg cemetery of honor.
