Swell:

The Schwandorf – Furth im Wald railway is a 67-kilometer single-track main line in Bavaria . It leads from Schwandorf via Cham to Furth im Wald . It is part of a national long-distance connection between Germany and the Czech Republic .

history

The AG Bayerische Ostbahnen received on 12 April 1856 by King Maximilian II the concession to build the track. On January 7, 1861, the first section from Schwandorf to Cham was opened. It was opened between Cham and Furth im Wald on September 20, 1861. A month later, on October 15, 1861, the Pilsen – Furth im Wald railway reached this station, creating a continuous connection between Nuremberg and Prague. After the line had been operated by the Bayerische Ostbahnen AG for 15 years, it was nationalized by the Royal Bavarian State Railways . Between 1892 and 1907 a total of four branch lines were built that branch off from this main line. The first two railway lines to Lam and the Cham – Waldmünchen railway line (opening: August 1, 1895) branch off at Cham (Oberpf) station . In Bodenwöhr Nord, the Bodenwöhr – Rötz railway has been branching off since August 3, 1896 , followed by the Bodenwöhr – Nittenau railway on November 5, 1907 .

Since 2001 the train service has been operated by Regentalbahn AG (RAG) under the name Oberpfalzbahn on behalf of DB Regio . After winning the tender by the Bavarian Railway Company in 2011, the Regentalbahn has been operating this route since December 2014 directly on behalf of the transport authority. In addition to the previous Regio-Shuttle , two-part LINK II railcars were also to be used. Due to approval problems, however, PESA LINK II was not used, but Alstom Lint 41s were ordered, which have not been used on this route since mid-2016, but have been used elsewhere in the Oberpfalzbahn network.

Due to the poor state of development, long-distance traffic from Nuremberg to Prague was discontinued on the route in 2012 and replaced by IC buses.

From July to December 2014, the platform at Roding station was relocated to the west and a bus stop was built at the new location for changing between buses and trains - this was done in cooperation between DB Station & Service and the Roding transport company. The new central platform is 170 m long and has a platform height of 55 cm above the top of the rail. The previously level access to the platform was replaced by a pedestrian overpass , so that no more passenger safety measures have to be carried out.

Construction work is currently taking place at the German border station in Furth im Wald. Deutsche Bahn decided to build a new island platform that can be reached barrier-free via an overpass. Then the house platform with a height of 55 centimeters will also be rebuilt.

Route description

course

The route leaves the Schwandorf train station and runs under the A 93 towards the east. At the height of Wackersdorf , which is located to the right of the route, the Upper Palatinate Lake District extends , which was created in 1982 after the lignite mining industry was abandoned . From Altenschwand the route runs through the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park , crosses the Taxöldern Forest and reaches the former Bodenwöhr railway junction , where the now-disused railway line to Rötz branched off.

Freight traffic continues to this day on the route to Nittenau, which also branches off in Bodenwöhr.

The route continues through the Neubäuer forest and meets the rain at Roding , which it follows to Cham. At Chammünster , the line branches off from the Cham - Lam railway to the northeast and follows the Chamb through the Cham-Further valley to Furth im Wald. From there the train continues to Pilsen.

State of development

alex near Cham towards Prague

The line is single-track and not electrified. In the short term, there are plans to upgrade the route through minor measures as it continues to Pilsen. As part of the Danube-Vltava Railway project , an extensive south-eastern bypass curve for Schwandorf is planned, which will make the previous change of direction of the trains from Munich to Prague superfluous and thus lead to a reduction in travel times. According to previous considerations, the new line should run from Regensburg via Nittenau and meet the previous rail connection at Roding. To the east of Furth im Wald, the previous winding route is also to be shortened.

Transport associations

The tariffs of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Landkreis Cham (VLC) apply on this railway line between Neubäu and Furth im Wald . The same applies to trips to and from the Cham district of Bodenwöhr and Schwandorf. Since July 1, 2011 will also apply GUTi and VLC - Kurkarten than tickets.

The DB tariff applies between these two train stations in the Schwandorf district .

Trains

Regional shuttle at Kothmaißling station

Until the 1970s, steam locomotives provided most of the traffic on this route. Various Bavarian regional railway types and standard locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn could be found here. Various Czech steam locomotives were also on the route in Furth im Wald. The first diesel multiple units were used on this route in the 1950s. Among other things, the VT 66 from WUMAG.

The regional trains on this line are with diesel railcar type Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 down. The regional express traffic is carried out with two pairs of trains of the DB Regio Bayern between Nuremberg and Furth im Wald, which are driven with tilting diesel railcars of the class 612 . In addition, seven pairs of express trains run by alex between Munich and Prague.

The train services of the railway line are part of the "Regionalzügenetz Ostbayern" tender by the Bavarian Railway Company. The Regentalbahn won this tender.
