DB Regio Bavaria is a region of DB Regio AG. This is part of the passenger transport department of Deutsche Bahn . As a railway company, DB Regio Bayern operates local rail transport services in Bavaria on behalf of the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) . In 2008 the transport volume on an average working day was around 1.1 million passengers.

Corporate structure

After the establishment of DB Regio in 1996, the central organizational structure of the division was changed at the beginning of the new millennium and nine regional organizational units were set up. In 2001, DB Regio Bayern was created from the merger of the previously separate areas of Northern Bavaria and Southern Bavaria and three bus companies. Under a joint regional management (for rail and bus traffic), five regional units were initially created: Verkehrsbetrieb Nord , Verkehrsbetrieb Süd , Verkehrsbetrieb Ost , Mittelstandsoffensive Mühldorf and S-Bahn München GmbH as well as the Südostbayernbahn as part of the Mittelstandsoffensive Mühldorf. In order to be able to react promptly to current developments on the passenger market, the structure was revised again in 2004 and the existing regional units (with the exception of the Südostbayernbahn, which is now part of DB RegioNetze) were redistributed and converted into five operationally working RegioBahns.

Until September 31, 2010 the RegioBahnen in Bavaria were called:

Since October 1, 2010 these have been called RegioBahnen, according to a central specification in five regional transport companies (RVB).

  • (RVB) Francs (from DB Regio Middle and Lower Franconia)
  • (RVB) Nordostbayern (from DB Regio Oberfranken and the northern parts of DB Regio Ostbayern)
  • (RVB) Allgäu-Swabia (from DB Regio Bayerisch-Schwaben and Allgäu)
  • (RVB) Upper Bavaria (from DB Regio Oberbayern and the southern parts of DB Regio Ostbayern)
  • (RVB) S-Bahn Munich

On January 1, 2017, DB Regio in Bavaria was restructured. The previously individually managed transport companies were dissolved and all operated under the name DB Regio Bayern . The Munich S-Bahn will be completely outsourced from the Bavarian region and will be subordinate to DB Group headquarters from January 1, 2017. The previous four offer names of the regions, Allgäu-Swabia, Franconia, Northeast Bavaria and Upper Bavaria are no longer used, only the locations Augsburg / Kempten, Nuremberg / Würzburg, Hof and Munich remained unchanged.

Passenger development

DB Regio Bayern transports around 1.1 million passengers on an average working day. The Munich S-Bahn accounts for around 780,000 passengers. Since the nationwide introduction of the Bayern-Takt in 1996, the number of passengers has increased by around 25%. In addition to the use of new trains and the expansion of services, the area-wide regular service is a decisive factor. Since 1996 there has been an hourly service on almost all main routes. Trains run every two hours on individual branch lines. In order to realize connections at junction stations, an integral clock timetable with individual correspondence stops at junction stations was implemented. In this case, the integral clock timetable is based on hourly connections to the same clock position. Every full or half hour, as many trains as possible reach a certain junction in order to provide the best possible connections to other trains with short transfer times. Correspondence stops also make it possible to switch between trains with many transfer relationships on the same platform. The traffic volume in Bavarian local transport increased by around 18% between 1996 and 2006.

Traffic implementation contract

In 2003, DB Regio Bayern signed a transport contract with the BEG for a contractual term of ten years. There are u. a. the volume of services (around 97.5 million train kilometers), the income from customer fees and the investments made by DB Regio Bayern in the acquisition of new vehicles. In addition, it stipulates the tendering for a certain volume of transport services. Accordingly, from 2003 to 2013, a total of 30% of the total traffic volume in Bavaria can be publicly tendered by the BEG and re-awarded. For the S-Bahn Munich and the S-Bahn Nuremberg operated by DB Regio Franken, transport implementation contracts were concluded until 2017. The reason for this is high investments in new vehicles. The Munich S-Bahn fleet has been completely converted to new class 423 multiple units in recent years. As part of the expansion of the Nuremberg S-Bahn network, new multiple units are also being purchased there. T. will replace the old construction vehicles.

Won tenders

DB Regio Bayern has so far emerged as the winner in eight of a total of 18 tenders from BEG. In the period between 2003 and 2007, DB Regio Bayern won six out of eleven tenders. This corresponds to a transport performance of around 20.51 million train kilometers per year and a share of 60% of the total volume of all tenders between 2003 and 2007.

Munich – Passau (Danube Isar Express)

Twelve new class 440 multiple units , which the manufacturer Alstom calls Coradia Continental, will be used on this route . The train service on the route has been condensed to a continuous hourly service from early morning to evening.

D-Network Nuremberg (Middle Franconia Railway)

(- Gräfenberg, Nürnberg - Northeast Simmelsdorf / Neuhaus, Fürth market Erlbach, Fürth Cadolzburg and Neustadt an der Aisch-Rothenburg ob der Tauber) since December 14, 2008 come on the non-electrified railway lines around Nuremberg new DMU series 648.3 for Commitment. DB Regio Bayern ordered 27 of the trains designated by the manufacturer as LINT 41 from Alstom. Originally, the BEG planned to create direct connections from Nuremberg to Markt Erlbach and Rothenburg od Tauber without changing trains using a wing concept. It was planned to wing the trains with several train parts from Nuremberg in the train station of Siegelsdorf and to let one train part run towards Markt Erlbach, the other towards Neustadt ad Aisch / Rothenburg od Tauber. At the same time, however, the planning for the construction of the Neustadt ad Aisch Mitte train station was advanced. Due to the loss of travel time due to the additional stop in connection with the high route utilization between Fürth and Neustadt (Aisch), the original wing concept based on diesel vehicles was no longer possible. For this reason, the move was made to operate the regional railways from Nuremberg to Neustadt ad Aisch with new class 440 electric multiple units. These trains have been in use since June 2010. All train connections in the Nuremberg D-Netz operate under the product name Mittelfrankenbahn. In a market research conducted in 2007, the majority of passengers chose this designation from a selection of several product names. Due to the registration problems of the new vehicles, similar to the Danube-Isar-Express, the planned use of the ET 440 could only take place with the small timetable change on June 13, 2010. Until then, the well-known Modus wagons , largely drawn by two locomotives, were used.

E-Netz Augsburg (Fugger-Express)

In the tender for the E-Netz Augsburg (electrical railway network in the Augsburg area), part of the Augsburg mobility hub , the BEG bundled the routes from Munich via Augsburg to Ulm , from Munich via Augsburg to Donauwörth / Treuchtlingen and the Donauwörth - Aalen route . The contract to carry out the transports on these routes ran from December 2008 and December 2009 for the Donauwörth - Aalen route until December 2019.

DB Regio Bayern ordered 37 new class 440 multiple units from the rail vehicle manufacturer Alstom . The trains running from December 2009 and December 2010 on the routes Munich - Passau and Nuremberg - Neustadt ad Aisch as well as in the Würzburg (Mainfrankenbahn) E network were used for the first time in Germany in the Augsburg E network.

Between Augsburg and Munich there is a half-hourly service from early morning until around 9:00 p.m. and in the Augsburg - Gessertshausen section the service increases to 4 trains per hour in rush hour. Since December 14, 2008, three trains per hour and direction have been running between Augsburg and Meitingen during rush hour and between Augsburg and Dinkelscherben there is an all-day half-hourly service from Monday to Friday.

The traffic management agreement expired in December 2019 and will be continued seamlessly as a transitional agreement until December 2022. The Go Ahead is expected to run from December 2022 .

E-Network Franconia (Franconia-Thuringia Express)

The tender for E-Netz Franken includes the hourly regional express from Nuremberg via Bamberg, Lichtenfels and Coburg to Sonneberg (Thuringia). Class 442 multiple units ( Bombardier Talent 2 ) are used.

D-Netz Augsburg I (Kneipp-Lechfeld-Bahn) - former network of the DB Regio

The two routes from Augsburg to Landsberg am Lech and Bad Wörishofen have been bundled in the D-Netz Augsburg I. The transport contract ran from December 2007 to December 2017. Between December 2017 and December 2018, the network could continue to be served by DB Regio Bayern in a transitional contract. The routes have been using diesel railcars of the 642 series traveled. The connections operated under the product name Kneipp-Lechfeld-Bahn and were partly driven in double traction. From December 2018, the Bavarian Regiobahn took over the regional network .

Regional traffic ABS / NBS Nuremberg - Munich (Munich-Nuremberg Express, Allersberg Express)

In the planning for the construction of the high-speed line Nuremberg - Ingolstadt, an operating concept for the implementation of fast regional traffic from Nuremberg via Ingolstadt to Munich was included. The municipality of Allersberg should be able to be reached directly by train again after decades without a connection to the rail passenger traffic via a new station to be built along the new line. Another stop on the high-speed route was at Kinding. After several decades, this community also received a direct connection to local rail transport. In order not to diminish the time saved by building the high-speed line on long-distance trains between Nuremberg and Munich (around 40 minutes compared to the journey via Augsburg), the aim was to establish conflict-free route relationships between the long-distance trains with speeds of up to 300 km / h and the up to now to realize a maximum speed of 160 km / h approved regional trains. DB Regio Bayern therefore applied to the BEG with IC wagon sets in order to win the tender for the tender. The concept envisaged implementing a two-hour cycle between the main train stations in Munich and Nuremberg with pressure-capable, 200 km / h fast IC cars . These connections operate under the product name München-Nürnberg-Express. Regional Express trains also operate between Ingolstadt and Munich as clock amplifiers with a maximum of ten IC car sets. The scheduled passenger service of the Munich-Nuremberg-Express and Allersberg-Express started with the timetable change on December 10, 2006. Six IC car trains hauled by a class 101 locomotive are used in the Munich - Nuremberg section . On the way, the trains serve the stations Allersberg (Rothsee), Kinding, Ingolstadt Nord, Ingolstadt Hauptbahnhof, Rohrbach, Pfaffenhofen (Ilm) and Petershausen (Obb) (this stop is not used by individual trains). With a top speed of 200 km / h, the Munich-Nuremberg Express is the fastest regional transport in Germany. During the journey, the maximum speed is reached on the high-speed route from the Nürnberg-Reichswald junction (near Feucht) to shortly before entering the Audit Tunnel (before Ingolstadt Nord) and on the upgraded route from Petershausen to Munich-Allach. The trains of the Munich-Nuremberg Express are very well received by commuters as well as by recreational athletes due to the nearby Altmühltal.

Due to the relatively short distance between Allersberg and Nürnberg Hbf, an hourly service at a staggered location to the Munich-Nürnberg Express with modernized Bn wagons with a speed of 140 km / h could be realized. These trains were given the product designation Allersberg Express and were initially drawn with the 112 series , then with the 111 series. Class 101 locomotives with IC cars have also been used on the Allersberg Express since 2013.

E-Network Würzburg (Mainfrankenbahn)

The tender for the E-Netz Würzburg includes the electrified routes from Würzburg to Nuremberg, Schlüchtern / Lohr (Main), Schweinfurt / Bamberg and Ansbach / Treuchtlingen. The start of operations by DB Regio Bayern will take place in two stages. From December 2009, new class 440 multiple units will be used on the regional express line Würzburg-Nuremberg and on the regional train line Würzburg-Kitzingen. A year later, these trains also use the other routes as regional trains. DB Regio Bayern has ordered a total of 27 of these multiple units to operate the Würzburg network. The contract is valid for all routes until December 2021. However, due to registration problems with the 440 series vehicles, the use of the new vehicles was delayed. In a replacement concept, n-wagons and Modus wagons with the 111 series continued to operate here until the 440 series was approved and delivered . To release the required locomotives (also for the Munich – Passau route), class 185 locomotives were hired from MRCE Dispolok . These are used on the Würzburg - Frankfurt am Main route with n-cars. Since June 13, 2010, the new class 440 electric multiple units have been operating in the first operating stage between Würzburg and Nuremberg as RE, and between Würzburg and Kitzingen as RB.

Werdenfels (Werdenfelsbahn)

The Werdenfels tender covers the entire regional traffic on the routes Munich - Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Mittenwald - Innsbruck, Tutzing - Kochel, Murnau - Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Reutte in Tyrol. Operations started when the timetable changed in December 2013. Class 442 multiple units (Bombardier Talent 2) are used. In cross-border traffic, the trains running from Mittenwald via Seefeld to Innsbruck and Reutte in Tyrol for the Austrian section are ordered by the Verkehrsverbund Tirol (VVT) directly from DB Regio Bayern based on the Werdenfels tender. The trains that run on the Karwendelbahn from Mittenwald to Innsbruck are managed by ÖBB and run on the DB - ÖBB cooperation. Individual trains run between Innsbruck and Garmisch-Partenkirchen with vehicles of the ÖBB series 4024/4023 ( Bombardier Talent ). The basic cycle on all routes is an hourly cycle, which in the Munich - Weilheim section and partly between Tutzing and Kochel is compressed to half an hourly cycle by the tendered wing train concept. In addition, three other RE train pairs run every hour between Mittenwald / Garmisch and Munich Hbf during rush hour.

Main-Spessart (Main-Spessart Express)

In January 2013, DB Regio Bayern won the Main-Spessart tender. This includes the hourly express service between Frankfurt am Main, Aschaffenburg and Würzburg and its two-hour extension via Schweinfurt to Bamberg. There is also a commuter train to Frankfurt as well as individual regional trains between Gemünden and Aschaffenburg. There are double-decker railcar of the type Bombardier TWINDEXX Vario used.

Ringzug West / NBS

In June 2013, DB Regio Bayern won the BEG's "Ringzug West / NBS" tender. From December 2016 this will include regional express services from Nuremberg to Augsburg, as well as from Nuremberg via Ingolstadt to Munich. For the latter, both the new line , the so-called Munich-Nuremberg Express , and the old line are used .

In the old galleries are double-decker railcar of the type Bombardier TWINDEXX Vario used. The locomotives of the DB series 102 with Škoda double-deck cars are to be used on the new line .

D network Allgäu

In August, it was announced that the Allgäu diesel network, which was scheduled to go into operation in December 2017, was awarded to DB Regio Bayern in two lots. Both lots could be won. In addition to existing vehicles from the 612 series , new PESA LINK vehicles will also be used. The traffic from Munich and Augsburg to Füssen was not part of this tender. This was advertised as part of the Augsburg I diesel network and awarded to the Bavarian Regiobahn .

Commercial transport

In contrast to the 2 hourly RE3 services ordered by the BEG between Nuremberg and Hof (with the possibility of changing to Dresden, ordered by the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor and Transport ), the services also operated every 2 hours until the timetable change on December 14, 2014 Regularly running RE9 of the Franken-Sachsen-Express between Nuremberg and Dresden through trains without an order by a transport authority completely self-economic. The Regiobahn Oberfranken was in charge of this.

Vehicle fleet

With a high investment volume, DB Regio Bayern has modernized its own fleet in recent years. Air-conditioned multiple units and double-decker trains with level entry areas as well as multi-purpose compartments for passengers with reduced mobility and cyclists are increasingly being used. Passenger coaches

In addition, vehicles from DB Fernverkehr are used for the Munich-Nuremberg Express. These are permanently rented IC cars that have been painted in the design of DB Regio. Class 101 locomotives are scheduled to be used as locomotives . In contrast to the wagons, these are not rented for a specific vehicle. These services are built into the normal 101 rounds. As a substitute, if the class 101 fails or as a control car replacement, locomotives of the class 120 are used.

In the event of a high level of damage or at short notice, if technically approved (clearance procedure), traction vehicles from other business areas such as B. the class 115 (DB Fernverkehr) or the class 232 (DB Cargo) were used.

Former vehicles

  • The 112 series was completely withdrawn from Bavaria
  • Series 798/998 (796/996): retirement in 2000
  • The scheduled operating time of the 420 series ( S-Bahn Munich ) ended in 2004. However, until the timetable change in December 2014, some vehicles returned to active use as amplifiers (original trains)
  • Series 624/924 and 634/934 : retired in 2005
  • Series 627 (627.0 and 627.1; known are: 627 006 and 627 101–105): retirement 2001–2006
  • Series 628.0 (628 001-024): parked in January 2005 and then withdrawn
  • Series 614/914 : Retired by 2010
  • At the end of 2011, the last electric locomotives of the 110 series stationed in Munich were retired and scrapped
  • With the timetable change in December 2014, the 610 series ("Pendolino") with its 20 vehicles was retired and parked. It is planned to keep two vehicles as a museum. Nothing is known about the fate of the other vehicles. Currently at DB Standstandsmanagement.
  • Class 611 (parked without being used in Kempten. In the meantime withdrawn because the plan for a mission was rejected. Partial DB standstill management. To be replaced by class 612 railcars that have become vacant)
  • Modus / PumA (DB standstill management and partly already new locations)

Works

The individual vehicles are located in the following plants assigned to DB Regio Bayern.

  • Kempten plant (home: series 612, 642, 218, 245)
  • Munich-Steinhausen plant (home: series 420, 423, 425, 426, 440)
  • Munich-Pasing plant (home: Dosto 93, Dosto 97, n-car, IC car of the Munich-Nuremberg Express, class 442)
  • Nuremberg Gostenhof plant (home: series 111, 143, 146, 642, 648, 442, n-cars, x-cars, Dosto 97, Dosto 03)
  • Würzburg plant (home: n-Wagen, modus-Wagen, class 440)
  • Hof plant (home: series 612, 641)

In addition, locomotives of the 111 series are located in the Munich Hbf plant, which is assigned to the long-distance transport division, since DB Regio itself does not have a plant in Munich that is suitable for locomotives. Because of the high utilization of the Steinhausen plant, some of the 440 series are also serviced there.
