Tender for the Nuremberg diesel network
On March 2, 2005, the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) tendered the "Nuremberg Diesel Network". The tender included the regional train services on the routes Nuremberg Northeast - Graefenberg , Nuremberg - Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach , Nuremberg - Neuhaus (Pegnitz) , Nuremberg - Neustadt (Aisch) (- Markt Bibart) , Fürth - Cadolzburg , Fürth - Markt Erlbach , Neustadt (Aisch) - Steinach (near Rothenburg) and Steinach (near Rothenburg) - Rothenburg and comprised a transport performance of 3.2 million train kilometers per year over a period of ten years.
DB Regio Mittelfranken emerged as the winner of this competition with the “Franklin” on November 18, 2005, for which 30 LINT 41 diesel multiple units were initially ordered from Alstom for 70 million euros . The operating concept originally envisaged connecting the lines Nuremberg - Siegelsdorf - Neustadt (Aisch) and Neustadt (Aisch) - Steinach (near Rothenburg) to one continuous line and connecting the Fürth - Siegelsdorf - Markt Erlbach line to Nuremberg by means of wings in Siegelsdorf . Due to the decision by BEG and DB to build the Neustadt (Aisch) stop in mid-December 2009, this concept had to be changed because the diesel multiple units could not have served the stop without affecting the line capacity due to their lower performance. The order for the vehicles was therefore modified by DB and three LINT-41 units were replaced with three more powerful Alstom Coradia Continental electric multiple units with financial support from BEG . In future, these will operate on the Nuremberg - Neustadt (Aisch) line, which means that direct connections from Nuremberg to Markt Erlbach and Steinach (near Rothenburg) can no longer be offered. On November 27, 2007, DB Regio Mittelfranken announced the change of the brand name from "Franklin" to "Mittelfrankenbahn", the reason for this was a survey among passengers and employees.
At the beginning of January 2008, the delivery of the multiple units began, which initially had to complete 6000 kilometers of test drives in their future area of operation. Since April 30, 2008, the first multiple units had been in regular passenger service on the Nuremberg - Neunkirchen am Sand - Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach / Neuhaus (Pegnitz) routes, and the Central Franconian Railway began operating with the timetable change on December 14, 2008.
In 2016, eight new vehicles of the type VT 622 were ordered for the routes to Cadolzburg , Graefenberg , Markt Erlbach , Neuhaus (Pegnitz) and to Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach , which are intended to complement the old vehicles of the type VT 642 and VT 648 . The first vehicles were delivered punctually at the beginning of January 2019, so that, after test and training drives, they are scheduled to be used from June of the same year.
