The Alstom Coradia Continental multiple units are part of the family of modular local transport vehicles - Alstom Coradia multiple units from the manufacturer Alstom Transport Germany , formerly Alstom LHB, Salzgitter.

development

A family of fully low-floor multiple units with conventional end bogies and Jakobs bogies between the intermediate cars emerged from the concept of the LIREX traveling on radially adjusting single-axle bogies . First the subfamily Alstom Coradia Nordic , suitable for operation in Nordic countries, was developed and later the subfamily Coradia Continental was derived from it for operation in Central Europe. The Coradia Continental vehicles differ from the Coradia Nordic in a new car body with straight side walls, adapted to the German boundary profile .

From 2009 to 2010, test drives with Coradia-Continental multiple units took place on the Velim railway test ring .

Technical characteristics

The trains of the vehicle family are made up of a modular system of standardized individual vehicles that carry their technical equipment on the roof, with the exception of the traction motors. The end cars are available in two lengths; they each carry a main transformer, a drive converter and an auxiliary converter. The intermediate cars carry the other equipment pantograph, compressor and battery box. The air conditioning unit for the passenger compartment is located in the center of each vehicle. In the vehicles of the 0440 series there is a separate engine cooler on the end car, in the vehicles of the 1440 series this is combined with the cooler of the main transformer.

The vehicle head can be designed with crumple zones ; In the 0440 series vehicles, these are not installed in order to reduce the vehicle length and save costs. In accordance with customer specifications, the side cab doors and a second PZB data setter on the Coradia Nordic have also been omitted. At agilis in the E-Netz Regensburg, in the E-Netz Augsburg and on the Mainfrankenbahn, the trains are equipped with extendable steps. Before the doors open, they extend under the train.

The vehicles are at least 95% recyclable.

Technical problems

engine

At the end of 2014 / beginning of 2015, the Augsburg trains showed severe signs of wear and tear on the drive motors, which, contrary to expectations, appeared two years before the due revision date. Since spare parts in the required quantity could not be obtained at short notice, three electric multiple units had to be completely withdrawn from service in November 2014. From February 2015, the entire vehicle fleet was called to the workshops for early engine replacement.

Wheelsets

In December 2016, flat spots and "crumbling" were found on the running surfaces of the wheel sets on 20 of 29 vehicles on the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn.

In mid-2017, some multiple units were taken out of service due to "unusual increased wear" on the wheel flanges.

variants

The multiple units are offered in different lengths. For this purpose, the number of intermediate cars (series 441 with drive equipment, 841 not driven) is varied. In addition, the end cars (series (0) 440) were delivered in two different lengths.

The multiple units of the 1440 series ( S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr , Breisgau-S-Bahn , partly S-Bahn Nürnberg , Zweckverband Großraum Braunschweig and Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen) receive a modified head according to standard EN 15227 , the length of which is only slightly shorter than the former longer variant. DB Regio AG

Five-part multiple unit (440 201-2)
Sliding step on the door of a DB train for Baden-Württemberg

DB Regio AG has ordered 76 Alstom Coradia Continental multiple units from Alstom LHB in Salzgitter since late summer 2006 . These are divided into four individual orders for the Augsburg area, for the Würzburg area, for the Nuremberg area and for the Munich – Passau connection. The eighty vehicles are divided into 26 three-part, 48 four-part and six five-part trains. The delivery was scheduled for the period between mid-2008 and the end of 2010.

The four-part vehicles of the 440.0 series offer 240 seats with a total length of around 70 meters (twelve of them in first class and 28 folding seats ), which is more than the vehicles of the same length from the 420 to 425 series. The seats are both opposite and opposite arranged in rows. The seat spacing in the row is 750 millimeters and in the face-to-face area 1700 millimeters. The entry height is 600 millimeters.

After initial problems with the approval, significant technical problems arose in operation, including couplings, air conditioning and toilets, which led to a lack of availability of the multiple units.

At the beginning of 2011, the trains were retrofitted with sliding steps. The installation of further luggage racks is also planned.

On October 27, 2016, DB Regio and Alstom signed a contract for the delivery of 24 vehicles for the Breisgau east-west network. The new electric multiple units will operate from December 2019 as three-part and four-part electric multiple units in the national design. The three-part variant has 164 seats and the four-part variant has 249 seats.

In March 2017, Deutsche Bahn ordered 27 trains from the 1440 series for the S3, S4 and S5 lines of the Nuremberg S-Bahn . The four-car trains are to be used from December 2020.

At the same time, 26 three- and five-car trains were ordered for use in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. The order for RE8 / RB33 is divided into ten three-part and 16 five-part. The order is based on the framework agreement concluded in 2011 for the delivery of up to 400 electric multiple units by Alstom.

On May 3, 2017, Alstom and DB Regio AG placed an order for 25 four-part Coradia Continental for the Saar RB Lot 1 electrical network on the Schweich - Trier Hbf - Saarbrücken Hbf - Kaiserslautern Hbf (from December 2019) and Trier Hafenstraße - Konz - Saarburg (from December 2020) known. The vehicles should have a top speed of 160 km / h. The car bodies are painted white and the vehicle heads are painted red. After a trial run with passengers (as part of the scheduled traffic) since October 14, 2019, the vehicles have been in regular use since the timetable change on December 15, 2019.

On November 14, 2019, DB Regio and Alstom signed a contract for the delivery of 19 vehicles for the Karlsruhe 7b EBO network. The new electric multiple units will run from December 2022 as three-part and five-part electric multiple units in the national design.

Augsburg "Fugger Express"

DB 2nd class passenger compartment
DB 1st class passenger compartment

The first order comprised 37 four-part vehicles with a total value of around 160 million euros for traffic in the Augsburg E network . These trains should be used as early as the timetable change in December 2008 on the routes Munich – Augsburg – Ulm ( railway line Munich – Augsburg , railway line Augsburg – Ulm ) and Munich – Augsburg – Donauwörth – Treuchtlingen ( railway line Augsburg – Nördlingen , railway line Donauwörth – Treuchtlingen ) , with the trains being winged in Augsburg. The trains run under the name " Fugger Express". With the timetable change in December 2009, the line (Munich – Augsburg–) Donauwörth – Aalen ( Riesbahn ) was included in the “Fugger Express”.

At the beginning of March 2008, a finished multiple unit of this type was presented for the first time. On July 18, 2008, 440 007 was presented to the press in Augsburg Central Station and on August 8, 2008 the class 440 was presented to the public there.

From the end of 2008 the first trains were on staff training trips. With previous knowledge of the 423 to 426 series, the training takes five days, with previous knowledge of other electric rail vehicles, six days.

440 007 on a staff training trip in Donauwörth station

The Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung wrote on October 24, 2008 that approval by the Federal Railway Authority was delayed because of “massive problems in control technology”.

The first multiple units were to be used in the Augsburg area when the timetable changed in December 2008; However, the planned traffic was carried out as before with locomotive-hauled trains ( series 111 with double-deck cars and series 110 or 111 with n-wagons ), some of which were also hauled by two locomotives (" sandwich "), or with class 425 railcars . Furthermore, (with the exception of the pair of rear-end cable trains RE 4198/4199) you always had to change trains in Augsburg Hauptbahnhof , and every second train did not stop in Munich-Pasing .

For the small timetable change in June 2009, it was originally planned to start full operation with the railcars and thus also the wing concept. However, since only 25 of 37 vehicles had been delivered and not all of them had been approved, and the software components for winging and uniting the trains in Augsburg had not yet been released, the replacement schedule continued; in Augsburg it was still necessary to change trains. However, 125 train services were provided on the individual sections during the week with the already registered railcars.

Since the timetable change in December 2009, the 440 series has been used almost exclusively and the trains can be separated and combined in Augsburg.

All 37 trains have been in passenger service since January 2010. 440 004 was a test and trial train that was used for measurement runs. At 440 002, a roof component burned in the Augsburg train station in 2009. Due to "technical reasons", the vehicle availability was not sufficient at the beginning, so that some trains were driven shortened; Some shuttles from Augsburg to Meitingen were alternatively, with a double traction of the 642 series down.

By increasing the seat spacing and installing additional luggage racks from autumn 2013, comfort on the trains is to be improved. In the narrowest rows of seats, the seat spacing will be increased from 750 to 830 millimeters, and in future the seat spacing will be 775 to 830 millimeters. To do this, four individual seats have to give way. In addition, a further 112 seats will have a luggage rack. DB Regio and the Bavarian Railway Company share the costs of around EUR 20,000 per set.

Würzburg "Mainfrankenbahn"

The second order comprised 31 trains (5 four-car and 26 three-car) for operation in the Würzburg area as the “Mainfrankenbahn”. Initially, eight units were delivered for the Würzburg – Nuremberg route , which should have been available after the timetable change in December 2009. However, they were only registered in March 2010. The remaining 23 vehicles were delivered by December 2010 and gradually put into service.

All 31 railcars are now based in Würzburg and are used on the following lines:

Passau "Danube-Isar-Express" (DIX)

The Donau-Isar-Express (440 547-8) in Vilshofen on the Danube in 2011

The third order comprised twelve trains for the Donau-Isar-Express , a regional express line on the Passau – Munich route. With the timetable change in December 2009, Coradia Continental should also be used every hour. Six five-car trains (440 201-440 206) with a length of 87 meters and 290 seats (24 of them in first class) and six four-car trains (440 043-440 048) with 233 seats (12 of them in first class) were procured . In the morning and afternoon rush hour, up to three trains have to be coupled between Landshut and Munich in order to cope with the large number of passengers coming to Munich.

After delays due to registration problems, replacement traffic with class 111 electric locomotives and n-cars or double-deck cars (built in 1997) was initially operated. Operation with the 440 series was almost completely started in June 2010. On the instructions of the BEG, however, a pair of trains with six double-decker cars (built in 1997) continue to run Monday to Friday during rush hour and at each end a class 111 locomotive instead of the 440.0 + 440.2 + 440.2 combination, which are kept as an operating reserve in Landshut.

Train names

Each of the twelve trains of the DIX should be named with a name of the stops served. So far, train 440 203 has been given the name "Passau - Living on Three Rivers", while train 440 044 has been named "Plattling - Nibelungenstadt". Other vehicles have since been named "Wallersdorf" (440 048), "Landau ad Isar" (440 206), "Moosburg ad Isar" (440 202) and "Landshut" (440 204).

Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn

1440 314 and 1440 308 of the DB on the S 8 to Hagen at the stop in Wuppertal-Unterbarmen

On April 3, 2012, Deutsche Bahn and Alstom announced the order for 28 three-part trains for use on the S 5 and S 8 lines of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn . The vehicles are equipped with a modified head according to EN 15227 with the latest crumple zones. They are designed for a platform height of 760 millimeters. Although many platforms on lines S 5 and S 8 currently have a platform height of 960 millimeters, the long-term plan is to convert all platforms to a height of 760 millimeters. The trains have 170 seats and 173 standing places. Operations started when the timetable changed in December 2014.

The Federal Railway Authority granted approval on September 30, 2014. The first vehicles had been in scheduled traffic on route S 68 since October 2014, before they were transferred to route S 5 / S 8 at the 2014/15 timetable change.

NordWestBahn (NWB)

Coradia Continental from NWB in Oldenburg

For the Regio-S-Bahn Bremen / Lower Saxony were the NordWestBahn 18 three- and five-part 17 Coradia Continental a total value of around 150 million euros ordered. Scheduled operations began with the timetable change in December 2010.

The multiple units are used on the following lines:

Agilis

Coradia Continental from agilis in Plattling

E-network Regensburg

18 three- (440.4) and eight four-car multiple units run within the framework of the Regensburger Stern on the routes operated by agilis from Plattling via Regensburg to Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz and from Landshut via Regensburg to Ingolstadt (since December 2011 further to Ulm ). With the exception of a trip to Eggmühl, the route from Regensburg to Landshut was discontinued when the timetable changed in December 2018 due to the introduction of the ÜFEX national airport express .

A train was shown at InnoTrans 2010 in Berlin. Scheduled operations began with the timetable change in December 2010.

In the meantime eight railcars have been named: the unit 440 401 on the name "Straubing", 104 on "Regensburg", 403 "Abensberg", 108 "Ulm" and 106 "Günzburg". Other units are named "Albertus-Magnus-Stadt Lauingen" (408), "Saal ad Donau" (402), "Gundelfingen ad Donau" (415) and Ingolstadt (417). From the middle of 2014 to the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019, two railcars with a conspicuous, large-area sticker ran: the 440 412 advertised excursion destinations along the route as a tourist train and the 440 414 advertised the Regensburg Arcaden shopping center .

To improve the capacity for taking bicycles with you in the summer, an additional twelve seats were added to twelve 440.4s in the first part of the car. Similar conversions were made in 2011 and 2013. This measure has now been implemented in all three-part multiple units and has been retained permanently.

Zweckverband Greater Braunschweig (ZGB)

enno multiple unit at InnoTrans 2014 in Berlin

Lower Saxony East Electric Network (ENNO)

On December 18, 2012, Alstom announced the order for twenty four-part Coradia Continental by the Braunschweig area association. There is an option for a further 13 vehicles. In February 2016, four of these railcars were ordered for delivery for 2017. They were delivered in spring 2017.

In December 2015, Metronom took over the operation of the Lower Saxony East electrical network for ten years with these vehicles under the product name ennoTemplate: future / in 5 years .

The cars only have one double door. In one end car there is a first-class compartment, in the other a compartment with seat reservation. One middle car has a multi-purpose compartment with a barrier-free toilet, the other middle car has a bicycle compartment. There are a total of 235 seats per train. There are sockets at the seats and WiFi reception on the train.

Central Saxony Transport Association (VMS)

two five-part multiple units from Alstom Coradia Continental on instruction trips in Dresden Hbf

Electric network in Central Saxony

On April 2, 2014, Alstom announced the order for 13 three-car and 16 five-car trains from the Verkehrsverbund Central Saxony . The order includes purchase options for up to 23 additional trains and is worth 150 million euros. The vehicles have been in use in the central Saxony electrical network since the small timetable change on June 12, 2016. This includes the regional express line between Dresden Hauptbahnhof and Hof Hauptbahnhof as well as regional train services between Dresden Hauptbahnhof and Zwickau Hauptbahnhof as well as Chemnitz Hauptbahnhof and Elsterwerda. The 13 three-part and 16 five-part trains reach speeds of up to 160 km / h in use. Each multiple unit has a capacity of 520 people with 240 seats in the five-car and a capacity of 320 people with 150 seats in the three-car. The trains are equipped with extendable steps for a completely level entry to platforms with a height of 550 millimeters.

In addition to initial problems, there were again failures due to crumbling on the treads in mid-2017, which, due to the local limitations, presumably resulted from the interaction between the vehicles and the Saxony-Franconian main line .

While the manufacturer Alstom is responsible for maintenance, the transport services are provided by Bayerische Oberlandbahn GmbH under the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn brand . The transport contract runs until December 2030.

Hessian State Railway (HLB)

HLB ET163 in Frankfurt (Main) Hbf

In December 2015, Alstom announced the order for 13 three-part and 17 four-part Coradia Continental. The trains commenced passenger service on the Südhessen-Untermain network in December 2018 and have since connected the cities of Wiesbaden-Mainz-Darmstadt-Aschaffenburg (RMV line 75) and Frankfurt-Offenbach-Hanau-Aschaffenburg-Laufach (RMV line 58). The trains were approved on July 27, 2018 and the trains that have already been delivered have been in trial operation between Frankfurt and Aschaffenburg ever since. A three-part vehicle, which was originally used in 2018 for training purposes and before the start of operations in the South Hesse-Untermain network. a. was used on the Dill route, still takes over individual trips on the RB 95 line between Dillenburg and Siegen.

In April 2018, Alstom received another order from Hessische Landesbahn GmbH (HLB) worth over 27 million euros for the delivery of five Coradia Continental. The vehicles were delivered in December 2019 and used in the Rhine-Main area.
