The Alstom Coradia Nordic multiple units are part of the vehicle family of modular, fully low-floor local transport articulated multiple units Alstom Coradia LIREX (the abbreviation LIREX stands for light, innovative regional express ), manufactured by Alstom Transport Germany , formerly Alstom LHB, Salzgitter, formerly Linke-Hofmann-Busch , Waggon-Fahrzeug-Maschinen GmbH. The first vehicle in this family was the LIREX of the DB series 618 , which was driven on radially adjusting single-axle bogies and was originally intended to serve as a test vehicle for new technology in local transport. The aim was a modular multiple unit with an electric, diesel-electric or hybrid drive in lightweight construction.

A family of fully low-floor multiple units with conventional end bogies and Jakobs bogies between the intermediate cars has emerged from the concept through further development . The Coradia Nordic subfamily, suitable for operation in Nordic countries, was first developed and later the Coradia Continental subfamily was derived from it for railway operations in Central Europe.

The trains are designed and manufactured by Alstom Transport Germany in Salzgitter.

X60

The six-part electric multiple unit Alstom Coradia Nordic X60 for AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL) was the first series vehicle of the Lirex family, 71 of which were delivered. The SL's X60s are 107.1 m long, six-part S-Bahn multiple units that run on seven two-axle bogies. They have 374 seats and 565 standing places. In operation, two X60s are usually linked together to form a network, so that a train can carry almost 2,000 people.

One of the technical parameters is that the floor height at 760 mm above the top of the rail is 92% of the wagon area - in the passage it increases to 830 mm and reaches a maximum of 1080 mm. They are designed for a top speed of 160 km / h. All clock trains are usually run with these vehicles. The older X10 multiple units only run at peak times and create technical reserves. The trains are 3258 mm wide and 4280 mm above sea level with a total length of 107.1 m.

The vehicles are completely manufactured in Salzgitter . Suppliers are SMA (Niestetal) for the auxiliary converters, Faiveley Transport (formerly HAGENUK - Hanseatische Apparatebaugesellschaft Neufeldt and Kuhnke) and MAB (machine and apparatus construction) (Schkeuditz) for the air conditioning in the passenger and driver's cabins and Faiveley Transport (Witten) for the braking equipment and Franz Kiel GmbH & Co. KG (Nördlingen) for the passenger seats.

X60A

In May 2010 a new order was placed for twelve more X60s that were delivered in 2012.

X60B

In June 2012, the SL ordered a further 46 X60 vehicles from Alstom. The order volume is 440 million euros. A total of 129 X60 Coradia Nordic were sold to SL.

Deliveries from Alstom in Salzgitter began in January 2016, with the trains being transported from Rostock to Trelleborg by ferry . Alstom will deliver two trains per month until November 2017. Storstockholms Lokaltrafik will then have 129 Coradia Nordic trains in operation, including 83 four-car units.

The 107.1 m long new generation has 150 changes compared to the previous model. They are equipped with ERTMS , have a socket at each seat and heated retractable steps on the doors. They have a capacity for 554 passengers, including 354 seats and 54 folding seats.

Test drives take place between Älvsjö and Uppsala . The X60B will be used with the start of passenger traffic in July 2017 with the opening of the Citybana .

X61

X61 from Skånetrafik

After the first vehicles were in operation at SL, other, similar vehicles were ordered from other railway companies in Sweden. These jobs are shorter, four-part versions called the X61 and X62.

For the tender for the Pågatåg regional train service in Skåne, Skånetrafik has ordered 49 four-part Coradia Nordic, known as the X61, at a total price of approx. 245 million euros from Alstom LHB. The first train should be completed in 2009 and the last in 2011. The trains will have an even lower floor and completely redesigned interiors, in which the number of seats per car is slightly lower and the aisle is sometimes wider than in the X60 trains. These deliveries were delayed due to quality problems. The first train was delivered in March 2010. The vehicles have been in use since autumn 2010.

In March 2008, Östgötatagraph ordered another five four-car trains for traffic in the Östergötland region . In June 2008, Jönköpings Länstrafik AB placed an order with Alstom for the delivery of two regional Coradia Nordic trains. These seven trains have been in passenger traffic between Norrköping and Jönköping since the end of 2010.

In December 2008, Västtrafik ordered eleven four-part X61s for S-Bahn traffic (" Pendeltåg ") in the Gothenburg area. The trains for Västtrafik will operate as comfortable S-Bahn trains on the Kungsbacka- Göteborg- Alingsås and Göteborg- Älvängen routes . The trains will be delivered from autumn 2010 to the end of 2012. Västtrafik ordered eleven more four-part X61s in December 2010.

According to a press release from Alstom, the orders from Norrtåg and Västtrafik include a total of 23 vehicles.

In 2014 five trains were ordered. In February 2015, Skånet Nahrungsmittel ordered another 25 vehicles. Delivery is scheduled to begin in April 2017.

In November 2017, 3 more vehicles were ordered by Östgötatagraph. These are to be built following the series of 30 vehicles for Skånet Nahrungsmittel and delivered in 2019.

X62

X62 of Norrtåg in Örnsköldsvik

In October 2008, Norrtåg ordered twelve four-car trains, known as X62s because of their higher top speed of 180 km / h, for traffic in Västernorrland County and Västerbotten County (Northern Sweden). The trains have a bistro compartment. All trains have been delivered and serve the Sundsvall - Östersund - Storlien route .
