The SJ X10 series is a standard-gauge Swedish electric multiple unit series . It was developed by Asea Brown Boveri as the successor to the SL X1 series. A total of 101 units were built between 1983 and 1992. They are designed for operation with 15 kV 16 2⁄3 Hz alternating current in suburban traffic and were originally used at Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL) and at Pågatåg in Skåne .

technology

When developing the X10 series, the experience gained with the previous series was taken into account. The car body is almost identical, only the vehicle head was given a tapering shape. The air inlets, which were often clogged with snow in the X1 series in the Swedish winter, have been relocated to the roof. The X10 series received more modern motors and an electrical resistance brake with braking resistors on the roof.

As with its predecessor, an X10 unit consists of a motor vehicle (X10 A) and a control car (X10 B). Each of the two cars originally had three double doors on each side. Up to five units can be driven in multiple traction. Mixed operation with X1 units is possible.

Interior decoration

The interior originally consisted of opposite bench seats in a 2 + 3 arrangement. Since the trains were designed for suburban traffic around Stockholm and Malmö, similar to the S-Bahn, there were no toilets, first-class seats and little space for luggage.

Mission history

procurement

Statens Järnvägar (SJ), which operated the Pendeltåg traffic around Stockholm on behalf of SL until 1999 , ordered the first 14 X10 units in December 1979. These were delivered in 1983. Five of them were intended for SL, the rest went to Pågatåg and were used in the greater Malmö area . In the following years, a total of 87 additional units were ordered.

52 units drove with SL, the rest with Upplands Lokaltrafik , Västmanlands Lokaltrafik and X-Trafik ( Gävleborgs län ).

Disposals due to renovations

With the completion of the conversion work to X11 (see below), the remaining 52 X10 units operated exclusively with SL in the greater Stockholm area. These trains were renovated between 1999 and 2002, including replacing the bench seats with individual seats.

Retirement and scrapping

In 2005 the first trains of the X60 series were put into operation at SL. These are more than twice as long as the X10, have a different door clearance and cannot be operated in mixed operation with X10 units. Initially, however, the X60 trains only replaced the X1 series, the last of which was taken out of service in April 2011. The X10 series remained in use.

For various reasons, the X10 units were not suitable for operation in the Citybanan tunnel, which has been under construction since 2009 . In particular, the platform screen doors in the Odenplan and Stockholm City underground platforms are matched to the door spacing of the X60 and therefore do not match the X10. Therefore, all Pendeltåg lines leading through the Citybanan tunnel had to be completely converted to X60 by the Citybanan opening in 2017.

With the delivery of the third series of X60 multiple units (X60B) from January 2016, the X10 were gradually decommissioned. On March 31, 2017, X10 units drove for the last time in scheduled traffic. One of the decommissioned units was sold to the leasing company Transitio as a spare parts donor. Four trains each went to Tågåkeriet i Bergslagen (TÅGAB) and Saga Rail , the rest were scrapped in the first half of 2017. TÅGAB intends to convert three of its trains to X11 (see below) and to use the fourth as a spare parts donor.

Further developments and modifications

The original plan to develop a three-part multiple unit for long-distance traffic based on the X10 was never realized. However, since the X10 has proven itself very well, several series were developed for local and regional transport with only minor changes. In addition, numerous X10 units were later converted into the X11 series.

SJ X11

Between 1994 and 1998 a total of 49 X10 units were converted for regional traffic. The middle doors were removed from the car and additional seats were installed. In addition, the trains have toilets, luggage nets over the seats and additional luggage racks, and in some cases bicycles can also be taken along. More comfortable seat cushions were installed. The 2 + 3 seat division was retained for the X11 in the greater Gothenburg area, otherwise the 2 + 2 seat division was changed. The new class designation X11 was assigned to the converted trains.

The motor vehicle of the X11 unit 3105 was damaged by fire in autumn 2011 and then scrapped. The control car of this unit was preserved undamaged. Otherwise, as of the beginning of 2018, all X11 units are still in use in various regions of Sweden. Many have now been repainted and modernized and some have been equipped with LED lighting, 230 V sockets in the seats and more comfortable seats.

SJ X12

The X12 series are new builds. A total of 18 units were built between 1991 and 1994. From the very beginning, the X12 only had four doors per car, a 2 + 2 seating arrangement, toilets and a first-class compartment. The top speed was set to 160 km / h increased. All of the X12 units still in existence after the conversion of two units to X14 (2000: 3223; 2008: 3190) are still in use as of January 2018.

SJ X14

Eighteen units of the X14 series were built between 1994 and 1995. In terms of vehicle technology, they are identical to the X12 series, including the top speed of 160 km / h and the door arrangement. For the interior, the 2 + 3 seat arrangement was chosen again. Two X12 units (2000: 3223; 2008: 3190) were later converted to X14, so that a total of 20 units of the X14 series exist.
