Upplands Lokaltrafik AB , or UL for short , is the company responsible for local public transport in the Swedish province of Uppsala län . UL has been wholly owned by the Landsting of Uppsala län since January 1, 2012 , previously the company was jointly owned by the Landsting and the municipalities in Uppsala län. Upplands Lokaltrafik is responsible for city bus traffic in Uppsala and Enköping , regional bus traffic in the province and regional train traffic from Uppsala to Gävle and Sala .

Transport offer

City bus transport in Uppsala

The city bus service in Uppsala is carried out by Gamla Uppsala Buss AB on behalf of UL.

City bus transport in Enköping

Within the city of Enköping, the company Sambus AB carries out city bus transport on behalf of UL.

Regional bus transport

In the province of Uppsala län there is a dense network of regional bus routes, which are operated by private companies on behalf of UL. In addition to regular buses, there are also express bus routes between Uppsala and Enköping and Västerås.

Train traffic

UL has been operating train services under the name Upptåget since 1991. Initially, only the Uppsala – Tierp route was served. From August 2006, traffic was extended in a northerly direction to Gävle and in a southerly direction via Stockholm / Arlanda Airport to Upplands Väsby . In December 2012, the UL trains between Upplands Väsby and Uppsala were replaced by Pendeltåg trains from Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL) and a new Upptåget connection between Uppsala and Sala was set up.

Tariff system

Zoning

Since April 1, 2014, the UL tariff area has been divided into five zones: Zone 1 comprises the urban area of Uppsala and thus, with the exception of Storvreta and Bälinge, the previous catchment area for city bus traffic. Zone 2 contains all the villages that belong to the municipalities of Uppsala and Knivsta. Zone 3 includes all other municipalities within Uppsala County. Zone 4 comprises the traffic operated by UL in the neighboring provinces of Gävleborgs län, Västmanlands län and Södermanlands län. Stockholm / Arlanda Airport is in Zone 5.

Tickets

Until August 2013, different, incompatible ticket systems existed in city, regional bus and train traffic. These were based on cardboard cards with magnetic stripes in regional bus and train traffic, and on chip cards in city bus traffic .

In September 2013 these were replaced by a uniform system based on chip cards. Now it was possible to load time cards or multi- trip cards as well as a credit called Reskassa for single trips onto the same card. For the time being, however, there was a partial tariff separation between city and regional transport, with city transport tickets neither regional buses nor trains could be used.

On April 1, 2014, the tariff system was also standardized and the separation between urban and regional transport was abolished. Since then, all tickets authorize the use of all UL modes of transport within their area of validity. Since then, season tickets (except 24-hour tickets) have been valid in the entire tariff area, while the price for single tickets depends on the number of zones traveled through.

Payment systems

  • Season tickets: Since the introduction of the chip card system in September 2013, monthly and annual tickets have only been loaded onto the chip cards called UL-Kort. New customers who do not yet have a UL-Kort must first purchase it for SEK 20. At the time of the system change, season tickets that were still valid were exchanged for charged chip cards at no cost to the owner.
  • Multi-trip tickets: Ten-trip tickets are only loaded onto the chip card for young people up to and including the age of 19 Adults can only purchase tickets for ten as an electronic ticket via a smartphone app.
  • Single tickets: Single tickets are valid immediately after purchase for a certain period of time depending on the number of zones. They can be purchased from advance booking offices, from vending machines, from the bus driver or from the train staff on Upptåget trains. Only card payments are possible at machines and with the driver or train staff.
  • Reskassa: A credit can be loaded onto a UL-Kort independently of any season tickets that may be on it; this is known as Reskassa. With this credit, single tickets can be purchased at the machine and from the bus driver with a discount of 20 percent compared to the advance booking price. Credit can be deposited at advance booking offices and machines.
  • No tickets can be bought on the Pendeltåg trains between Uppsala and Stockholm. Pendeltåg travelers are obliged to purchase a valid ticket before starting their journey. Access chip card readers are available for holders of SL-Access cards on the platforms in Uppsala and Knivsta.
  • Combined tickets: UL tickets are only valid on the Pendeltåg trains between Uppsala and Arlanda. Passengers who want to travel beyond Arlanda to Stockholm can purchase combined tickets in advance, from machines and as an electronic ticket.
  • Electronic tickets: On March 1st, 2015, SMS tickets were abolished. Since then, electronic single and multi-trip tickets can only be purchased and used using a smartphone app.
