Sala is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province County Västmanland and the historical province Västmanland .
The main town of the municipality of the same name was granted city rights by King Gustav II Adolf in 1624 .
Silver mine
The place was initially not where it is today, but at the nearby silver mine , which was built at the time of Gustav Vasa . The city was moved to its current location when it was granted city rights. The mine was in operation from the 15th century to 1908 and is now one of the local attractions. In addition to silver, lead was also mined.

Reichsstrasse 56 and 70 intersect in Sala, and the 72 from Uppsala ends here . The 70 originally ran right through the city, this route was replaced in 2008 by a bypass road south of the city center.

The station is located at the opened in September 1873, originally as stambanan Norra designated Dala Line . In 1875 the Sala – Tillberga line was added and in 1901 the Sala – Gävle line, which was closed again in 1964 . The SJ long-distance trains between Stockholm and Borlänge stop in Sala. Sala is also the terminus of the Upptåget regional trains from Uppsala and the SJ regional trains from Västerås.
