Career

Erik Ersberg began his career in the youth teams of VIK Västerås HK , before he made his senior debut in the fourth-class Division 2 in the 2000/01 season and became a regular goalkeeper. With an average of only 1.48 goals conceded per game, he was directly involved in the promotion of his team to Division 1 and in the following season they achieved the next promotion to the second-rate Allsvenskan .

Ersberg established himself in the following years among the goalkeepers of the Allsvenskan and took part with Västerås in the SuperAllsvenskan , the promotion round to the Elitserien , in 2003/04 , but they failed when they only finished seventh in the eight-team qualifying tournament. After another season in the Allsvenskan, Ersberg was signed by HV 71 Jönköping from the first-class Elitserien, where he played ten times as a substitute goalkeeper for Stefan Liv and was able to convince with good performances. When Liv moved to North America in the summer of 2006, Ersberg took over the post as regular goalkeeper, finished second with Jönköping at the end of the main round of the 2006/07 season and was awarded the Honkens trofé as the best goalkeeper in the Elitserien.

Due to his good performance, the Los Angeles Kings from the North American National Hockey League became aware of him, which finally gave him a one-year contract on May 31, 2007. The 2007/08 season began Ersberg with the Manchester Monarchs , the farm team of the Kings from the American Hockey League , where he prevailed as a regular goalkeeper. Despite a rather poor season and only ten wins from 30 games, Ersberg was called up to the Los Angeles NHL squad in February 2008 after Jason LaBarbera was injured. Ersberg lost the first three games, but was then able to fend off all 40 shots by the opponent in a 2-0 win over the Ottawa Senators and with further convincing performances in the following games he secured the regular place in the goal of the Kings.

Before the 2010/11 season Ersberg was sent again to the Manchester Monarchs, for whom he played until the end of October, before he was committed by Salawat Yulayev Ufa from the Continental Hockey League . With Salawat he won the Gagarin Cup in 2011 . In the 2012/13 season he played for the KHL newcomer HK Donbass Donetsk .

On October 10, 2013, the Iserlohn Roosters announced his commitment as successor to Sébastien Caron . For the 2014/15 season Ersberg returned to HV 71 Jönköping and signed a two-year contract. In July 2016, Ersberg ended his active career and then joined the Vienna Capitals from the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga as a goalkeeper coach.
