HV71 (in international tournaments with the local suffix HV71 Jönköping ), in the years 1994-2002 also with the name HV71 Blue Bulls , is a Swedish ice hockey club , which is based in the city of Jönköping in Småland .

history

HV71 was founded on May 24, 1971 through the merger of the two clubs Huskvarna IF and Vätterstads IF, which came from the suburbs of Jönköpings, which is why the club was first named Husqvarna / Vätterstads IF. But in the same year the short form HV71 was made the official club name. For the first time in Sweden's top division, the Elitserien , HV71 succeeded in 1979, but was relegated straight away. The club has been a full member of the Elitserien since 1985 and has been one of the top clubs in Sweden since the turn of the millennium at the latest. At the end of the 1990s, HV71 was nicknamed "Blue Bulls" for a short time.

In 1995, 2004, 2008, 2010 and 2017 HV71 won the Swedish Championship by winning the play-off finals. Furthermore, you finished the main round of the Elitserien 2003/04 and 2005/06, 2009/10 and 2010/11 first.

HV71 took the eighth and last place in 1995, which still entitled to play-off participation. After winning the " best of five " series against Djurgårdens IF 3-0 in the quarterfinals, HV71 managed to get into the final after a 2-0 deficit in the series by winning three consecutive wins against Malmö IF. The "Blue Bulls" finally won the final with a 5: 4 after extra time in the decisive fifth game. The decisive goal in sudden death was scored by the later master coach Johan Lindbom. It was the first and so far only time that the eighth table was champion.

In the 2004 quarter-finals, HV71 set a new record when seven goals were scored in a third of the game against MoDo Hockey . In the semifinals HV71 defeated Frölunda HC and in the final they prevailed against Färjestad BK . This is followed by lean years for HV. In the 04/05 season, the North American professional league NHL made a forced break through a "lockout". While many other clubs took the opportunity to lure the Swedish NHL stars into the Elitserien, HV decided to contest with the existing team. A calculation that didn't work out: the main round ended in 10th place, which meant that the play-offs were missed. In the following season, a good team was put together, which completed the main round first. As the clear favorites in the play-offs, HV reached the semi-finals, where the opponent was again Färjestad. The “ best of seven ” series was only decided in the last game, when the team from Karlstad scored two goals in the last few minutes and thus made it to the final. In the following season, the semi-finals were again the end of the line when the last game against MoDo was lost. In the 2007/08 season, Per Mårts Kent "Kenta" Johansson from league competitor Timrå followed. With several expensive and top-class reinforcements, HV71 achieved an undisputed first place in the main round as well as the victory in the sixth final against Linköpings HC and thus the third championship title. Eric Johansson scored the decisive goal after 5 minutes and 17 seconds in extra time.

In 2009 the team reached the final again, but lost to Färjestad. In 2010 you could win the championship again. Overall, the final series of 2010 was characterized by many close games: five of the six final games were decided in sudden death. In the sixth game it was Teemu Laine who gave HV71 the fourth title with his goal in the fourth minute of extra time.

After 2010, however, the performance curve clearly showed a downward trend. In 2011, HV was again first in the preliminary round, but retired after four defeats in a row in the quarter-finals against AIK (8th of the preliminary round). Also in the following seasons HV71 regularly lost in the round of play-offs.

It wasn't until the 2016/17 season that the club unexpectedly won its fifth Swedish championship. This time the final was decided in extra time, this time against Brynäs IF. Simon Önerud, who learned to play ice hockey at HV and had completed almost his entire career there, secured the team the fifth title in the club's history with his goal.

Ice rinks

In 2000, HV71 moved into the Kinnarps Arena , which, while the game continued, was built around the old Rosenlundshallen , the first fully enclosed ice rink in Sweden, which opened in 1958. This increased the possible number of viewers from 4,500 to 6,300. Since the 2004/05 season, the stadium has been expanded to accommodate over 7,000 spectators, including 1,100 standing spectators.
