Adam Almqvist (born February 27, 1991 in Jönköping ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with HK Dinamo Minsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since July 2020 and plays there in the position of defender .
Career
Adam Almqvist began his career in the youth teams of HV71 and already showed his skills as an offensive defender in the Swedish J18 Elit at the age of 16, which also gave him playing times with the U20 juniors in the J20 SuperElit in the same season . In 2008 he also played for his Swedish home province of Småland in the national TV swaddling tournament, won the championship and was the best assist provider among the defenders.
In the 2008/09 season he was a regular player in the U20 team of HV71 and the highest point defender of the J20 SuperElit. Both the preliminary and the main round finished the team in second place. In the playoffs they made it to the final of the Swedish U20 Junior Championship, in which the Brynäs IF team lost after two games. Despite good performance in the juniors, Almqvist was not nominated by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association for the U18 Junior World Championship in 2009 because he did not convince in international tournaments during the season.
A few months later, Almqvist was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in the seventh round at position 210 and thus as the penultimate player. As a result, he took part in the Red Wings training camp in autumn 2009, but returned to Sweden, where he initially continued to play with the U20 juniors of HV71. There he showed relatively quickly that he had developed significantly. In 15 games he scored five goals and prepared 29 goals and was the league's top scorer for a long period of time. Due to the increase in performance, he was appointed to the professional team and made his debut in the Elitserien in November 2009 , where he stood in a row with the former NHL player Janne Niinimaa on the ice during the 2009/10 season .
At that time Almqvist was characterized as a defender whose strengths were mainly on the offensive. On the defensive, he would still have deficits due to his stature. He has a good shot and, according to Håkan Andersson, European Scouting Director of the Detroit Red Wings, has a very well developed ice hockey instinct.
In May 2011 Almqvist signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Detroit Red Wings, which parked him on loan at HV71 for the 2011/12 season . The defender made his AHL debut for their farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffins , on March 30, 2012 in the home game against the Charlotte Checkers .
In November 2013 Almqvist made his debut in the NHL and played a total of two missions in which he scored a goal. At the same time, he continued to play mainly for the Griffins and ended the 2013/14 season as the second best scorer of his team. With 49 assists, Almqvist was also the third best assists in the league and the most successful defender in this category. After the end of the season he was awarded for his achievements with the election to the AHL Second All-Star Team .
After his NHL entry contract had expired, Almqvist decided to move to the Continental Hockey League and joined Severstal Tscherepowez . There he could not establish himself, however, and returned to the following season for HV71 in Sweden. For the 2018/19 season there was a commitment to SC Bern , with which he won the Swiss championship . For the following season, the Swede was awarded a one-year contract by Admiral Vladivostok . He then moved to the Belarusian capital club HK Dinamo Minsk within the league in July 2020 .
