Due to an injury to the right winger of the Blackhawks, Patrick Kane , he made his debut on December 10, 2010 in the home game against the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League . It was his only game in the 2010-11 NHL season .

After more than three years with the Rockford IceHogs, where the striker scored 44 goals in 242 games and prepared another 65, Klinkhammer moved to the Ottawa Senators in December 2011 and initially played with their farm team Binghamton Senators in the AHL. On March 4, 2012, he played against the Florida Panthers for the first time with Ottawa in the NHL. After the game, Ottawa's coach Paul MacLean described Klinkhammer as one of his best players. In his 15 games of the NHL 2011/12 Klinkhammer got two assists.

On July 3, 2012, he signed a contract with the Phoenix Coyotes . Due to the 2012 NHL lockout , the winger first played with the Portland Pirates in the 2012/13 season . After only 10 missions, the Penguins gave him in January 2015, including a first-round vote for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, to the Edmonton Oilers , who in return transferred David Perron to Pittsburgh.

In June 2016, Klinkhammer left North America and joined HK Dinamo Minsk from the Continental Hockey League . After a year of play there, he was transferred to league competitor Ak Bars Kazan shortly after the start of the 2017/18 season in exchange for Stefan Elliott .
