Philip Bo Samuelsson (born July 26, 1991 in Leksand ) is an American ice hockey player of Swedish origin who has been under contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms from the American Hockey League since October 2018 and played for them in the position of defender .

Career

Samuelsson, whose father Ulf Samuelsson long in the National Hockey League played was during the summer holidays his parents in Sweden Leksand born and raised in the United States on. There he played in the 2008/09 season, initially for the Chicago Steel in the United States Hockey League , before he briefly moved to the US National Team Development Program of the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey at the end of the season to attend the U18 Junior World Championship 2009 to prepare. Following this, the defender was selected in the second round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in 61st place by the Pittsburgh Penguins , the team for which his father had also played. First, however, Samuelsson moved to Boston College and ran there for the following two seasons in Hockey East , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In both game years the Eagles won the championship of Hockey East and in 2010 also celebrated winning the national championship.

In April 2011, the defender finally signed his first professional contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins and for the next three and a half years was mainly employed in their farm teams , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League and the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL . During the 2013-14 season he finally made his debut in the NHL for the Penguins, when he was used in five games. Nevertheless, he found himself again in the AHL in the 2014/15 season before he was transferred to the Arizona Coyotes in December 2014 in exchange for Rob Klinkhammer . But they also let him stay with their Portland Pirates farm team in the AHL . Only later in the season he came to four NHL appearances for the Coyotes. He also played just as many in the 2015/16 season , when he was mainly active for the Springfield Falcons in the AHL. Since the Coyotes did not renew the expiring contract at the end of the season, Samuelsson joined the Canadiens de Montréal as a free agent in early July 2016 , who handed him over to their farm team St. John's IceCaps in the course of preparation .

After about half a season, which Samuelsson had spent exclusively at the IceCaps in the AHL, he was given to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Keegan Lowe . They also use him for the time being in the AHL, with the Charlotte Checkers . After the 2017/18 season, his expiring contract in Carolina was not renewed, so he signed an AHL-limited contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in October 2018 .

International

Samuelsson was part of the US team at the 2009 U18 World Junior Championship . The defender managed to prepare three goals in seven tournament games. At the end of the tournament, the Americans were crowned U18 world champions with a 5-0 final victory over Russia.
