The 2014-15 NHL season was the 98th season of the National Hockey League (NHL). The regular season began on October 8, 2014 and ended on 11 April 2015, winning the Presidents' Trophy by the New York Rangers . The most valuable player - both by players and journalists - was voted Carey Price from the Canadiens de Montréal , who was also named the best goalkeeper. The best scorer was the Dallas Stars with Jamie Benn , who scored 87 points. As in the previous two years, Alexander Ovetschkin scored the most goals (53) .
In the subsequent playoffs , the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 in the final , winning their third Stanley Cup in the last six years. Duncan Keith of the Blackhawks received the Conn Smythe Trophy , while Tampa had the top scorer in Tyler Johnson .
League operation
As part of the Entry Draft 2014, the Phoenix Coyotes changed their name to Arizona Coyotes and will henceforth accrue under this. After last year's restructuring, no changes were made to the mode or the distribution of the franchises in the run-up to this season . Rather, an NHL All-Star Game took place again this season after a two-year break ; the 60th game in this series was played on January 25, 2015 in the Nationwide Arena of the Columbus Blue Jackets . The 2015 NHL Winter Classic was played by the Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals on January 1, 2015 at Nationals Park in Washington, DC In another open-air game , the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles faced each other on February 21 as part of the 2015 NHL Stadium Series Kings opposite.
Rule changes
The following rule changes came into force at the beginning of the 2014/15 season:
- The trapezoids behind each goal in which the goalkeepers can legally play the puck have been widened by approximately 1.2 meters (4 feet ).
- The distance between the hashmarks and the Bully circles has been increased from approx. 0.9 meters (3 feet) to 1.7 meters (5 feet and 7 inches ), thus aligning with international standards.
- At the beginning of overtime , the teams switch sides and the ice is smoothed again . The aim is to produce more goals in overtime with better ice and the longer way to the bank (and thus to change rows) and thus avoid shootouts . At a meeting of the general managers of all teams in November 2014, the smoothing of the ice was abolished because the resulting break was found to be too long.
- The shooters in a shootout no longer have to be determined in advance by the trainer. After each round it can be decided spontaneously which player will be used.
- If a player commits a rule violation after an icing of his team in the subsequent face-off, he will be cautioned and not replaced, as usual, by a teammate. If the same player subsequently violates the rules again, this will be punished with a two-minute penalty for delayed play.
- The NHL Situation Room has been given more leeway to decide when to use video evidence against an allegedly irregularly scored goal. Furthermore, the general managers decided at their meeting in November that the situation room should also be allowed to interrupt a game in progress. This should happen when a regular goal has been scored, this has already been determined in the video evidence, but there has not yet been a regular interruption in the game.
- The spin-o-Rama is from now on in a penalty prohibited and in the shootout.
- The penalties for various fouls have been adjusted or placed in different categories.
- If the puck leaves the playing field by the attacking team in the attacking third, the face-off takes place in this attack zone and not in the neutral zone. This is only true when the puck leaves by a shot on goal on the field while a teammate, the gate or the gang was distracted or the protective glass of the gang to break goes.
Entry Draft
The 2014 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 27 and 28, 2014 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . With the first overall draft pick , the Florida Panthers selected Canadian defender Aaron Ekblad . Sam Reinhart and Leon Draisaitl were selected in second and third place . A total of 210 players from twelve nations were drafted from the NHL franchises in seven rounds.
