Samuel "Sam" Bennett-McDowell (born June 20, 1996 in Richmond Hill , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been with the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League since July 2014 . The Flames selected the center in fourth overall position in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft .

Career

Sam Bennett was born in Richmond Hill and grew up in neighboring Holland Landing . In his youth he played for the York Simcoe Express and the Toronto Marlboros before he was selected in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection in the first round by the Kingston Frontenacs . In his first season in one of the strongest junior leagues in Canada, Bennett had 40 points from 60 games. He decided in honor of Doug Gilmour for the shirt number 93 - Gilmour, who played over 1,400 NHL games and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame , also acts as General Manager of the Frontenacs. At the end of the season, he took part with the Canadian U18 national team in the U18 Junior World Championship 2013 in Sochi and won the gold medal there, as well as a little later at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2013 .

In the 2013/14 season, Bennett scored 41 goals and 59 assists in 64 games, drawing the attention of higher-class teams. As a result, he was ranked number one of the most promising talents in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2014 by the Central Scouting Service . However , he was unable to take part in the CHL Top Prospects Game due to a groin injury . In the actual Entry Draft, he was selected by the Calgary Flames in fourth place. As a result, the Flames signed him in July 2014.

Bennett underwent shoulder surgery in October 2014 and was five months out. The Flames then gave him to the Kingston Frontenacs to give him game practice. It was only shortly before the end of the regular season that he was recalled to the NHL squad. Therefore, he did not begin his first full season in the NHL until the 2015/16 season, where he scored four goals in January 2016 in the 6-0 victory of the Flames over the Florida Panthers . This made him the youngest player in franchise history to hit a hat trick and the first player to score four goals in a game since Jarome Iginla in February 2003.

In July 2019, Bennett signed a new two-year contract in Calgary for a total salary of $ 5.1 million.
