Michael Robert Stone (born June 7, 1990 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League since February 2017 and plays for them in the position of defender . In his youth, Stone played for the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL and made his NHL debut for the then Phoenix Coyotes in February 2012 . His younger brother Mark is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

youth

Michael Stone, like his brother Mark , who was almost two years younger than him , was already enthusiastic about ice hockey when he was a child - he worked as a sports reporter for a local newspaper. In the junior division, he played for the Winnipeg Hawks and the Winnipeg Thrashers , before being selected in the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 73rd position by the Calgary Hitmen . Thus, Stone played from the 2006/07 season with the Hitmen in one of the three most important junior leagues in Canada.

After two average seasons (with 20 and 35 scorer points) the defender managed to increase his balance to 61 points in 69 games of the 2008/09 WHL season ; he was also elected to the WHL's East Second All-Star Team . With these achievements, Stone drew attention to the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2008 , in which the Phoenix Coyotes then selected him in 69th position. The following season turned out to be even more successful with the Hitmen, when Stone and the team won both the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as regular season champions and the Ed Chynoweth Cup for victory in the subsequent play-offs . Because of his achievements he was elected to the East First All-Star Team after his last WHL season . Interestingly, he faced the Brandon Wheat Kings with the Hitmen in the Conference Finals in both 2009 and 2010, playing directly against his brother Mark. The Hitmen won both series (4-0 and 4-1).

Phoenix / Arizona Coyotes

Stone had already signed an entry level contract with the Phoenix Coyotes in December 2009 and switched to their organization after the 2009/10 season. For the time being, the Coyotes gave it to their farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), the San Antonio Rampage . After 70 AHL games in San Antonio, the Coyotes changed their cooperation partner, so that Stone was now on the ice for the Portland Pirates . In this 2011/12 season he also made his debut in the NHL in February 2012; In the end, he completed 13 games in the highest North American ice hockey league and was also used in two play-off games against the Los Angeles Kings .

In the 2012/13 season, Stone was used more or less equally in the NHL and AHL and increasingly earned a place in the Coyotes. After his contract expired in the summer of 2013, he signed a new three-year contract in Phoenix and was promoted to become a regular player with 70 appearances in the following 2013/14 season. For the next two and a half years, the defender was an unrestricted regular in the franchise, now renamed Arizona Coyotes . In the summer of 2016, Stone's contract was extended by one year.

Calgary Flames

After more than six years in the Arizona state franchise , Stone was transferred to the Calgary Flames in mid-February 2017 in exchange for a third-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . In addition, the Coyotes should receive another five-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft , provided Stone extends his contract in Calgary after the end of the season. For the remaining term of the contract, his ex-employer also took over 50 percent of Stone's annual salary. Stone then signed a new three-year contract with the Flames in June 2017, which is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 3.5 million, fulfilling the condition of the transfer deal.

However, Stone could not meet expectations in Calgary, so he spent parts of the 2018/19 season with the Stockton Heat in the AHL before his remaining contract year was paid out in August 2019 (buy-out) . About a month later, however, he agreed on a new contract with the Flames.
