Austin Czarnik (born December 12, 1992 in Washington Township , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player on the position of the center who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League since July 2018 and for their farm team , the Stockton Heat , used in the American Hockey League .
Career
Czarnik spent his junior years in the North American Hockey League and United States Hockey League . First he was there from 2008 to 2010 for the US National Team Development Program of the US ice hockey association USA Hockey . For the 2010/11 season he moved within the USHL to the Green Bay Gamblers after he had retired from the association's sponsorship program due to old age. After a year in Green Bay, the center forward began studying at Miami University in the state of Ohio . As a result, he also played for the university's ice hockey team - first in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , later in the newly introduced National Collegiate Hockey Conference - in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's game operations . Over the course of four years, Czarnik has garnered numerous awards, including being named CCHA Player of the Year in his sophomore year and being one of the ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award . However, his time at the university was crowned by winning the division title in the NCHC at the end of the 2014/15 season, which was also his last year in college gaming.
Shortly after the college season ended, the undrafted free agent was signed by the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League in late March 2015 . They used him for the rest of the season and the entire 2015/16 season with the Providence Bruins , their farm team in the American Hockey League . With 61 points in 68 games, the center earned a nomination for the AHL All-Rookie Team . At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , Czarnik finally made his NHL debut for Boston. After the 2017/18 season, however, his expiring contract was not extended, so he signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Flames as a free agent in July 2018 .
International
On the international stage, Czarnik represented his home country at the U18 Junior World Championship 2010 and the U20 Junior World Championship 2012 . He won the U18 junior world title with the US team in 2010. To win the title, he contributed six scorer points, including five goals, in seven games. At the U20 Junior World Championship, he finished seventh with the team.
