Derek Allen Ryan (born December 29, 1986 in Spokane , Washington ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League since July 2018 and plays for them on the position of the center .
Career
Derek Ryan began his career with the Spokane Chiefs from the Western Hockey League . He then enrolled at the University of Alberta , where he studied physiology . At the same time he played for the university's ice hockey team, the Alberta Golden Bears , in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). In his first year in college ice hockey, he won the CIS championship, the University Cup, with the Bears . In 2010 he reached the championship final again with his team, in which the Bears lost 3-2 to the Saint Mary's Huskies . During the following season he was one of the outstanding players of the LIga and was honored with several awards - among other things he was named Most Valuable Player of the Western Conference. In 2011 he finished his studies and decided to move to Europe. He received a one-year contract with SAPA Fehérvár AV19 from Székesfehérvár in Hungary and played with this club in the multinational Erste Bank ice hockey league as well as in the Hungarian ice hockey league .
In 2012 he moved to EC Villacher SV within the EBEL . There he was immediately one of the most productive players and in November 2013 received the invitation to represent his home country in the Germany Cup . He was the first player to make the leap from the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga to the US team . Ryan made his international debut on November 8, 2013 in Munich against the Slovak team. The USA won the tournament with two wins and one loss, and Ryan contributed three assists to this success.
On March 28, 2014 Derek Ryan recorded three assists in the semi-final game against HC Bozen and surpassed Todd Elik's season record with 99 points scorer (98 points in the 2006/07 season). Ultimately, he improved the record to 100 season scorer points before he was eliminated with the EC VSV against HC Bozen in the playoff semi-finals. Due to a release clause in his contract for European top leagues, he then dissolved his contract with the VSV and moved to Örebro HK from the Svenska Hockeyligan . There he received a two-year contract.
In his first season in Sweden Ryan was awarded the league's best scorer and as a result was awarded the Guldhjälmen as Most Valuable Player . The attacker also caught the attention of North American teams, of which the Carolina Hurricanes from the National Hockey League signed him in June 2015 .
He spent the 2015/16 season mainly on the Hurricanes' farm team , the Charlotte Checkers from the American Hockey League (AHL), which he led as team captain. He also made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Hurricanes and scored a goal in his first game. After the 2017/18 season, his expiring contract was not extended, so he signed a three-year contract with the Calgary Flames in July 2018 .
International
At the 2018 World Cup , Ryan took part in an international tournament for the first time and won the bronze medal with the USA national team .
