The 2014/15 season was the 40th season of the Svenska Hockeyligan . The main round began on September 10, 2014 and ended on March 5, 2015. The subsequent play-offs took place in March and April 2015. It was the second season since the name change from Elitserien to Svenska Hockeyligan. Last year's relegated AIK Ishockey was replaced by city rivals and record champions Djurgårdens IF , who secured promotion in the Kvalserien . The championship was determined for the last time among twelve teams, before the number of participants will be increased to 14 for the coming season. For the first time in the club's history, the Swedish champions were the Växjö Lakers , who had only been promoted to the Elitserien in 2011 and defeated last year's champions Skellefteå AIK with 4-2 wins in the play-off final . The Leksands IF rose despite the increase in the league in the HockeyAllsvenskan .

Main round

mode

The twelve teams of the Svenska Hockeyligan each play five games against each other. Six teams have 28 home games and 27 away games, while the other teams play 27 home games and 28 away games. A team that was allowed to play more home games this season will have fewer home games in the next season, unless they are relegated.

Each team receives three points for a win in regular time. If there is a tie after regular time, extra time is played in which the winner receives two points and the loser one point. After a draw there is a shootout after the five-minute extension . Each team initially has three shooters, then in the event of a tie the knockout system continues. There are no points for a loss in regular time.

As in previous years, the teams in 11th and 12th place have to play for their place in the league in the Kvalserien against the best four teams of the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan .

Play-offs

mode

The best six teams qualify directly for the play-off quarter-finals, the teams in places 7 to 10 play out two further play-off participants in best-of-three series. In addition, in contrast to the previous season, the four best-placed teams are no longer allowed to choose their opponents in the quarter-finals. Instead, the first in the main round will face the worse-placed winner of the best-of-three series, the second-placed winner plays against the better-placed winner, the third duel against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth.
