The 1959/60 season was the 16th season of Division 1 as the highest Swedish ice hockey division . Master was for the seventh time in the club's history Djurgårdens IF . Nacka SK , Rönnskärs IF , Västra Frölunda IF and Karlbergs BK relegated to the second division.

In the main round, the league was divided into two groups (North and South). Each of the eight teams per group played a total of 14 games. The first two in each group qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played. The last two in each group were relegated directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
