The 1965/66 season was the 22nd season of Division 1 as the highest Swedish ice hockey league . Brynäs IF became champions for the second time in the club's history . Rönnskärs IF , Hammarby IF , Färjestad BK and Malmö FF relegated to the second division.

In the main round, the league was divided into two groups (North and South). Each of the eight teams per group played a total of 21 games. The four best-placed teams in each group qualified for the playoffs in which the champions were played. The last two in each group were relegated directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
