Main round
mode
The 14 clubs play a double round with 52 games per club. The best six teams qualify directly for the play-off quarter-finals, the teams in places 7 to 10 play out two further play-off participants in best-of-three series. The other play-off series will be played in the best of seven mode.
Each team receives three points for a win in regular time. If there is a tie after regular time, extra time is played in which the winner receives two points and the loser one point. After a draw there is a shootout after the five-minute extension . Each team initially has three shooters, then in the event of a tie the knockout system continues. There are no points for a loss in regular time.
For the teams in positions eleven and twelve, the season is over after the main round, during which the last two players play against the two representatives from the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan in the relegation for their place in the league.
Season course
Although Färjestad lost his game against Djurgården after extra time on the last day of the main round, the team's one point was enough for first place in the main round and thus for the bonus of one million Swedish kronor (approx. € 100,000). Luleå defeated the Växjö Lakers in the last game, but finished the main round in second place due to the poorer goal difference against Färjestad. In the battle for the last places in the round of 16, Rögle and Örebro qualified. Brynäs and Linköping had a chance of the round of 16 before the last match day, but since both teams lost their games against Frölunda (Brynäs) and HV71 (Linköping), they finished the main round and thus the season in eleventh and twelfth place respectively.
Djurgårdens Jacob Josefson received after the main round the "guldhjälmen", the award for the most valuable player in the SHL.

Relegation
The final of the Hockeyallsvenskan between the AIK Solna and the Oskarshamn IK was won by the Smålanders and thus qualified for the relegation against the 14th of the SHL 2018/19 (Timrå). As the loser of the Hockeyallsvenskan final, the AIK had to qualify against the winner of the Hockeyallsvenskan "slutspelsserie", Leksands IF. Since Leksand won this duel with two wins, the team from Dalarna qualified for the relegation against the 13th of the SHL 2018/19 (Mora). Since this pairing in the relegation has occurred in the last two seasons and since Mora and Leksand are very close to each other (both cities are on the Siljan ), this year's duel became the “Battle of Siljan 3.0” (”Slaget vid siljan 3.0 ”). Both relegations will be played in the best-of-seven mode.
