The Scandinavium is a multifunctional arena in the Swedish city of Gothenburg . The hall has been the home of the ice hockey club Frölunda HC in Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL) since it opened .

history

A design competition was held prior to construction, in which the architect Poul Hultberg was able to prevail as the winner. Work on the hall began in 1969. To mark the 350th anniversary of the city in 1971, the building opened on May 18 that year. Hultberg also developed the plans for the hall's entrance area, which was added to the building in 1991. Since then, this new entrance contains the main checkout, a restaurant, a bar, an office area and a restaurant belonging to the McDonald’s fast food chain . The roof was designed in the style of an inverted paraboloid . The Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary , Canada, opened in 1983, was roofed over with a similar construction. Since the edge of the ice surface is made of variable hard glass, the size of the playing field can be reduced very quickly from international (61 × 30 m) to North American dimensions (56 × 26 m).

The highest number of visitors gathered on May 29, 1988 in the Scandinavium. A Whitney Houston concert was watched by 14,606 people. The international ice hockey match between Sweden and Czechoslovakia on September 12, 1971 saw 13,963 visitors.

Events

In addition to the ice hockey world championships in 1981 and 2002 , other important sporting events such as international championships or finals in the Davis Cup , the floorball world championship in 2014 and the Eurovision Song Contest 1985 took place in the Scandinavium . Since 2003, the semifinals of the Melodifestival have been held annually in the hall . The Scandinavium applied to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 . It might have had to be rebuilt for this.

The Scandinavium has hosted one of Sweden's most important horse shows, the Gothenburg Horse Show, every year since 1977 . In 1979 the first final of the Show Jumping World Cup was held here. Since then, the show jumping World Cup finals have taken place here in 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2008, 2013 and 2016 ; the dressage riders held their World Cup finals here in 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2013 and 2016.

In addition to the sporting events, the Scandinavium is also used as a concert arena.
