The Malmö Arena is a multi-purpose arena in the Swedish city of Malmo , province County Skåne . It is also known as Hyllie Arena , after the district of Hyllievång .

History and use

Construction work began on January 10, 2007, and the Malmö Arena was finally opened on November 6, 2008. The main user of the arena is the Malmö Redhawks ice hockey team from the Svenska Hockeyligan , the highest Swedish ice hockey league in Sweden. Before that, the Redhawks played at the Malmö Isstadion . The arena has a capacity of 12,500 spectators for ice hockey games and other sporting events, and there is space for up to 15,500 visitors in the hall for concerts.

The hall was the venue for the finals of the 2011 men's handball world championship . The finals of the 2010/11 Svenska Superligan, the Swedish floorball championship , were played for the first time on April 16, 2011 in the Malmö Arena.

Since 2009 a semi-final of the Melodifestivalen , the Swedish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , has taken place in this arena. In May 2013 the Malmö Arena hosted the Eurovision Song Contest . Malmö prevailed against the Friends Arena in Solna , which was considered too big and too expensive, mainly due to the well-developed infrastructure . The arena wanted to apply again for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2016, but did not do so because it was already fully booked in April and May 2016.

Concerts (selection)

In addition to sports, the hall is used as a concert arena.
