Antony Garfield Henry (* in St Albans , Great Britain ) is a British opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Henry was the third of five children to a West Indies family in St Albans and left middle school at 16 to seek work in London. His big dream was to become a dancer and actor. He financed his visit to the Rambert School of Ballet with a temporary job as a kitchen helper and other jobs. After graduating, he got his first experience in London's West End, where he was cast in Starlight Express , Children of Eden , Miss Saigon and Carmen Jones .

After taking a vocal training course at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA), his singing teacher Mark Meylan discovered him for classical music. Since then, Henry has devoted himself almost exclusively to opera; he made his debut as Luigi in Il tabarro , staged by Simon Callow . This was followed by engagements at Champer Opera , Castleward Opera , Opera North and in the Royal Albert Hall .

Career

In 2003, record producers first noticed him and he signed a contract with Warner Music . That same year he was invited to Buckingham Palace to sing on Prince Edward's birthday . As a guest soloist he appears regularly in various opera houses such as the Scottish Opera or the Riverside Opera .

British newspapers hailed him as the “opera sensation” ( Daily Telegraph ) and the “British response to Pavarotti ” ( Mail on Sunday ). In Germany he first appeared in December 2006 as part of the Nokia Night of the Proms .

On November 21, 2007, he sang the two national anthems before the decisive European Championship qualifier between England and Croatia.

Tony Henry lives in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness with his wife and three children .
