Carmen seduces Joe while being transported to prison. Carmen escapes and Joe has to go to prison himself. His fiancée Cindy Lou breaks up with him too. In his distress and devoted love for Carmen, he deserted from the army. But the relationship between Joe and Carmen does not develop as Joe hoped. Carmen is bored with Joe. When her friends Frankie and Myrt invite her to a boxing match, she feels that the boxer Husky Miller is a far more interesting man. Filled with jealousy and hatred, Joe murders Carmen.
background
The film Carmen Jones is based on the Broadway production of Carmen Jones from 1943. Oscar Hammerstein wrote English texts for the performance to the music of Georges Bizet. The arias of the opera were not sung by the actors in the film, but dubbed. Soprano Marilyn Horne gave Dorothy Dandridge her singing voice and LeVern Hutcherson sang the parts for Harry Belafonte.
Carmen Jones was the first film work by the designer Saul Bass , who later became known for his drafts of the film credits in many film classics.
Reviews
"The music gains naturalness and persuasiveness through the" modern ", realistic framework, the convincing play and the vocal performances of the actors round off the positive impression. Instead of gypsy romanticism, a convincing drama about culpable and tragic entanglements is offered, which convinces in the immediacy of its feelings. "
"A successful opera film."
