Tomorrow is a new day is a 1966 American drama directed by Otto Preminger with Michael Caine and Jane Fonda in the leading roles. The two and a half hour film was based on the novel by KB Gilden .
action
In the US province, in the scorching summer of 1946. The young and very wealthy owner of a canning factory, Henry Warren, lives in the state of Georgia with his wife Julie Ann. In order to optimize its business, Warren plans to purchase undeveloped neighboring farmland on behalf of its largest customer, a vegetable company. But there is a big catch: two of the landowners don't want to sell. One is Henry's cousin Rad McDowell with his wife Lou, the other piece of land belongs to the black Reeve Scott, whose sick old mother once cared for upbringing when the colored people in the area were still kept as house servants and domestic servants who took care of young Julie Ann. Henry Warren is not picky about his means when it comes to "persuading" the two unruly to sell. When he is unsuccessful with good words, he sends out armed thugs. However, none of his brutal measures work, and Warren begins to get angrier.
His ruthlessness also gradually alienates Henry and Julie Ann, especially since Warren demands of his wife to claim after Rose's death that Rose's son Reeve illegally owns his land. Reluctant to help her husband, Julie Ann files a lawsuit. But then the local black teacher Vivian Thurlow, who, thanks to the city's archives, can prove that Reeve is the legitimate owner of the contested piece of land, thwarted Warren's plan. Julie Ann then withdraws her allegation against Reeve. Henry now sees only one way to get to his goal. With the help of some representatives of the Ku Klux Klan , he has a dam blown up, whereupon the released water floods the farmland of the two adversaries and makes it unusable for Reeve and Vetter Rad. Rad's eldest child falls into the water and drowns in the attack. For the first time, Henry is appalled by the consequences of his actions. But things get worse for him: Henry's wife leaves him, and Rad and Reeve, with the help of the neighbors, decide to restore their land so that it can be cultivated again.

Reviews
The overly long film was a big flop and at its premiere not only resulted in numerous reviews, but also some controversies, as some critics considered it to be allegedly racist, exactly contrary to Preminger's intention. Here are a few examples:
Der Spiegel wrote in its October 30, 1967 issue: “In the long-lingering southern saga, Otto Preminger (" The Man with the Golden Arm ") colors the US race like a Sunday painter: The negroes gospel to God and suffer like Lambs; the whites are rogues and goats and seek the black continent. "
"Often grotesque, over-ripe melodrama ... a curiosity thanks to the cast of Fonda and Caine."
“A literary film adaptation carried out by outstanding actors, condensed into a plea for a peaceful and helpful coexistence; psychologically credible and convincing, but a bit blurry in the social aspect. "
"Incredibly clichéd, epic melodrama with action and sex as additions."
