Loyal Griggs

Loyal Griggs (born August 15, 1906 in Michigan , † May 6, 1978 in Laguna Hills , California ) was an American cameraman .

Life

After graduating from high school , Griggs began working for the special effects department at Paramount Studios in 1927 . He was jointly responsible for the earthquake sequences of the film San Francisco (1936) with Spencer Tracy . In 1938 he and other Paramount colleagues received an Honorary Technology Oscar for his work on the film Predator in Alaska ( Spawn of the North ). The 1950 film His Last Treason (directed by Lewis R. Foster) was his first film as chief cameraman. In 1953 he received an Oscar in the category Best Color Camera for his camera work in the film My Great Friend Shane . There were other Oscar nominations for The Ten Commandments (color camera, 1956), First Victory (black and white camera, 1965) and The Greatest Story of All Time (color camera, 1965). In 1971 he retired from the film industry.
