action

Ross Carpenter lives as a fisherman in Hawaii . He is the captain of the fishing boat "Kingfisher", with which he takes tourists out to sea and helps them with deep-sea fishing . Ross' mother died during his birth, and he later built the sailing boat "Westwind" with his father. When his father died unexpectedly, Ross had to sell the boat. Papa Stavros, who is like a father to him, bought the boat from him, but let him continue to live on it and go out with him. Ross' dream is to be able to buy back the boat. He subordinates everything to that - including his girlfriend Robin, who works as a singer in a bar.

Now mother Stavros is ill. The doctor advises her to move away from the sea and so the Stavros family decides to sell all the boats. Wesley Johnson acquires the boats, including the "Westwind". After tough negotiations, Ross is allowed to work for him. Although he starts all over again as a fisherman, he is still allowed to live on the “Westwind” until a new buyer has been found for the sailboat.

Ross finds consolation during this time not with Robin, from whom he has separated, but with Laurel, whom he met in Robin's bar. They both meet frequently and spend the night with the Yung family in Paradise Cove during a thunderstorm. Since Ross continues to save money for the boat, he starts working as a singer in Robin's bar in the evenings in addition to his fishing work. As a result, he transfers Laurel, who reproaches him - the two split up in an argument.

Laurel starts working as a hat seller. What Ross doesn't know is that Laurel's parents are rich. She finally asks her father for the $ 10,000 necessary to buy the "Westwind" and buys the boat. When Ross finds out about this, he gets angry: he always had to beg for things from others and always had to accept the alms of others so that he would not accept the "west wind" from Laurel on principle. He travels to Paradise Cove without saying goodbye to Laurel. She only finds out from Robin where Ross is. She decides to ride the "Westwind" on horseback. Wesley, who wants Laurel for himself, is the only one who offers himself as a skipper . During the crossing he presses Laurel. Ross' friend Chen watches them from a fishing boat and alerts Ross about the Coast Guard 911 call . He goes to the "Westwind" with father Yung, knocks down Wesley and takes Laurel on board his small motorboat. Wesley also has to promise to buy the boat back from Laurel.

In the evening, the Yung family has a big party on the occasion of a good catch. Ross proposes marriage to Laurel . He realized that he had previously placed the "Westwind" above everything else. He doesn't want to buy it anymore. Instead, he plans to build a new sailboat with Laurel.

criticism

The film service wrote in 1963:

“This time Elvis Presley's nature boy charm gets Hawaii's shores as the background - Freddy made in USA, so to speak. [...] The rock 'n' roll king of yore has vastly expanded his repertoire. In this film it ranges from the sailor shantie to the Jamaica song to the love song and twist . This rich potpourri is loosened up by the [...] meager plot, which is filmed quite well and with barely hinted at sex. Young people from the age of 14 who are 'into Elvis' do not need to miss the film. "

- film service 1963

The lexicon of international films published by film-dienst in 1990 called Girls! Girls! Girls! as "an Elvis-Presley potpourri that reaches from twist to fluff."

Time Out London found that the film, while not a paragon of intellect and learning, was one of Elvis Presley's better films. This is mainly thanks to leading actress Stella Stevens, who was one of the few film partners Elvis Presley was able to compete with.
