A Coast Guard is mostly a national, usually the respective Ministry of Interior under standing authority or even an alliance of several State authorities for protection and control of maritime transport ( maritime police ), to the rescue in emergencies and disasters and prevention and prosecution of offenses in the territorial sea and on the high seas , such as the monitoring of fish catch quotas and compliance with other requirements (checking the mesh size of the safety net so as not to endanger the population of small and juvenile fish) or environmental protection regulations. A national coast guard can also be part of the armed forces at sea, such as the United States Coast Guard .

Germany

In the Federal Republic of Germany these tasks (of the 1994 established Coordination composite Coast Guard from several federal units and establishments Federal Customs Administration / water customs , federal police , Waterways and Shipping Administration , Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food ) perceived.

In Schleswig-Holstein existed from 1995 until the end of 2005 resolution its own Coast Guard as a composite of Water Police , the Office for Rural Areas (ALR) and the State Agency for Nature and Environment.

Since the pooling of competencies under a common roof at federal level failed due to resistance from other federal states, Schleswig-Holstein decided to dissolve this association.

United States

The United States Coast Guard is by law one of the United States' armed forces . In the event of peace, it reports to the United States Department of Homeland Security . The Coast Guard may be subordinated to the Ministry of the Navy as a sub-armed force upon the direction of the President in an executive order or in the context of a declaration of war by Congress . For this purpose, the authority is organized militarily in personnel and procurement matters. The Coast Guard is based in the federal capital Washington, DC
