The People's Armed Police ( Chinese 中国 人民 武装警察 部队 , Pinyin Zhōnggúo Rénmín Wǔzhuāng Jǐngchá Bùduì , English People's Armed Police, PAP for short ) is a paramilitary organized police unit ( gendarmerie ) of the People's Republic of China . Her duties include maintaining public security, working in the event of civil unrest and uprisings ( crowd and riot control ), providing assistance in the event of natural disasters , countering terrorism and guarding government buildings and properties. It reports to the Central Military Commission and also supports the People's Liberation Army as light infantry in times of war . It is not synonymous with the Military Police of the People's Republic of China ( 纠察 ), since the People's Liberation Army and the People's Armed Police have their own military police units . The coast guard has been integrated since 2018 .
