The French Ministry of Defense ( Ministère des Armées ) is the ministry that directs the French Armed Forces . The French President is the Commander-in-Chief of the Army . The French defense budget was the third highest in the world in 2009.

Florence Parly has been Secretary of Defense since June 21, 2017 .

The Ministry of Defense has a long tradition; the first defense minister was Louis de Revol in 1589 .

structure

The Ministry is headed by the Minister of Defense . The official title since May 2017 has been Ministere des Armées .

The Ministry is located in the Hôtel de Brienne , 14 rue Saint-Dominique, in the 7th arrondissement of Paris and, since the end of 2015, also in the Hexagone Balard in the south-west of Paris.

Defense policy

In 1966, under President Charles de Gaulle , France withdrew from the military structure of NATO . France has been a full member of NATO again since 2009.
