Tilman Sauer

Tilman Sauer (* 1963 ) is a German science historian .

Sauer received his physics diploma from the Free University of Berlin in 1990 and received his doctorate in theoretical physics from the TU Berlin in 1994 . From 1994 to 1996 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. From 1997 to 1999 he worked for the Hilbert edition at the University of Göttingen . From 1999 to 2001 he was an assistant at the Institute for the History of Science at the University of Bern . He has been a Senior Research Associate in the Faculty of History at Caltech since 2001 . In 2010/2011 he was a lecturer in the history of science at the University of Bern. He has been a professor at the University of Mainz since 2015 .

Sauer deals with the history of general relativity (AR), the scientific work of Albert Einstein and is (from volume 9) co-editor of Einstein's Collected Works (Einstein Paper Project). In particular, he works on the scientific manuscripts on AR and unified field theory. In particular, he examined and edited, together with Jürgen Renn, Einstein's 1912 Zurich notebook, which is important for the history of the AR. Among other things, they found that Einstein had already developed his ideas on the gravitational lensing effect back then (1912) , which he only published in 1936.

Sauer also researched David Hilbert's contributions to the early history of AR and the priority dispute Hilbert-Einstein and Hilbert's program on the fundamentals of physics. The priority dispute is, among other things, about the question of what is on a missing page of a flag print from Hilbert's essay - Sauer is of the opinion that the complete Einstein field equations were not yet there.

Sauer also worked a. a. with Richard Feynman and the development of the theory of path integrals .
