John Stachel (born March 29, 1928 ) is an American physicist and historian of science.

Stachel received his doctorate in 1958 on a topic of general relativity at the Stevens Institute of Technology . After teaching positions at Lehigh University , the University of Pittsburgh , he came to Boston University in 1964 , where he was professor of physics until retirement.

Stachel is best known for his work on the history of the theory of relativity and Albert Einstein . He is co-editor of Einstein's Collected Works (at Princeton University Press from 1987) and director of the Boston University Center for Einstein Studies . He publishes the Einstein Studies book series with Don Howard .
