Florence Parly (born May 8, 1963 in Boulogne-Billancourt ) is a French business leader and politician. On June 21, 2017, she became Minister of Defense under President Emmanuel Macron in the Philippe II cabinet . She also retained this position in the subsequent Castex cabinet . She belongs to the Socialist Party (PS).

Life

Florence Parly is the daughter of Jeanne-Marie Parly, who was Claude Allègre's personal advisor ( directeur de cabinet ) in the Ministry of Education in 2000 . Florence Parly studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris ( Sciences-Po ) and the École nationale d'administration (ENA) with the final year ( doctorate ) Fernand Braudel (1985–1987). She has been a Knight of the Legion of Honor (Ch. LH) since 2009 .

Parly has been an advisor in various ministries since 1987 and from 1997 worked in the State Chancellery ( Cabinet ) of Prime Minister Lionel Jospin . From 2000 to 2004 she was State Secretary in the Ministry of Budget ( Ministère de l'Action et des Comptes publics ). In 2004 she moved to the Paris Île-de-France Regional Development Agency (L'Agence Régionale de Développement Paris Île-de-France) as President .

She then continued her career in the private sector, initially at Air France , where she was responsible for strategic direction from 2007. From 2008 to 2014 she was Deputy General Manager of Air France.

In November 2014 she was appointed Deputy Director General of the French State Railways (SNCF), responsible for strategy and finances. In May 2016, she was promoted to CEO of SNCF Voyageur and was responsible for all of the group's long-distance passenger transport.

On June 21, 2017, President Emmanuel Macron appointed her Minister of Defense in Édouard Philippe's cabinet . She succeeded Defense Minister Sylvie Goulard , who had resigned and justified this with an investigation into her party MoDem for a bogus employment affair.

Parly has two children and is married to Martin Vial , a former president of La Poste .
