Alain Richard (born August 29, 1945 in Paris ) is a French politician . From 1997 to 2002 he was French Defense Minister .

Life

Alain Richard is a graduate of the École nationale d'administration , which he attended from 1969 to 1971.

In 1975 he joined the Parti socialiste (PS), and from 1977 was mayor of Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône in the Val-d'Oise department , a municipality with around 23,000 inhabitants. From 1978 to 1993 he was directly elected MP for the Val-d'Oise department in the French National Assembly . In the Jospin cabinet he was Defense Minister from June 2, 1997 until his resignation on May 6, 2002. Since 2003 he has been working for the “À gauche, en Europe” foundation founded by Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Michel Rocard . He is a member of the European Leadership Network .
