Wilhelm Christhelf Sigmund Mylius (born May 2, 1753 in Berlin , † March 31, 1827 in Berlin) was a German writer and translator .

Life

The son of the writer and scholar Christlob Mylius began writing while studying law in Berlin and Halle and quickly made a name for himself as a translator of French and English texts. In his early days he worked with the writer Johann Friedrich Schink , whom he had met in Halle in 1774 . After the first successes had set in, he dropped out of his studies. His Candide translation , published for the first time in 1778, experienced several new editions during his lifetime (1782 and 1785 in a slightly modified form by him, 1794 without his intervention) and was used as a text basis for German Candide editions until the 20th century. Today, his transmissions of other French classics such as Lesages ' Gil Blas von Santillana ' (1779), Fontenelle 's 'Dialoge über die große Welten' (1780) or the 'Life of my father' by Restif de la Bretonne are remembered. One of Voltaire's edited and annotated editions of all of Voltaire's writings (1786–1795, 27 volumes) has been completely forgotten, and his translation of the works of Frederick the Great has almost been forgotten.

The writer and translator, who apparently spent almost all of his life in his native Berlin , lived there according to Friedrich Nicolai's statements in 1786 "on the long bridge in his mother's house". Later he was the owner of a house on the Schloßplatze in Berlin, but lost the fortune he had gathered with his pen during the Napoleonic wars : “The unfortunate war of 1806 deprived him of his fortune; the burden of billeting made his house indebted that he had to sell it for a price far below its value, and he had the sad fate of so many scholars that he saw the last years of his life dwindling under worries and troubles ”.
