The Mouvement démocrate (MoDem; German  Democratic Movement ) is a centrist and liberal political party in France , which was founded in May 2007 on the initiative of the politician François Bayrou .

Bayrou announced on April 25, 2007, after his good result in the 2007 presidential election , that he wanted to inherit the Union pour la démocratie française by founding the party and that he would run in the 2007 parliamentary elections. Bayrou had initially suggested the name Parti démocrate , but this was changed to Mouvement démocrate , as there is already a little-known Parti Démocrate in France.

Bayrou positioned the party as a link between the moderate left and the moderate right and hoped to establish MoDem as an alternative political force in France.

In 2017, MoDem supported Emmanuel Macron in the presidential election , which is why MP Jean Lassalle resigned. Macron won this in the runoff election with around 66 percent against Marine Le Pen .

Content profile

During the first time after its founding, in view of the heterogeneous groups and many newcomers to politics in the party, it was “completely unclear which group would ultimately prevail and how the various priorities could be hierarchized”. In particular, the meaning of the concept of centrism in French politics, to which the Mouvement Démocrate ascribes itself (it even called itself "hypercentric"), is largely unclear; it is also questioned whether it is an autonomous force with a specific ideology.

The Mouvement Démocrate is committed to a humanism that puts people at the center of its actions. The Mouvement Démocrate is committed to the promotion of republican ideals and sustainable development by building democratic responsibility in national, European and global politics, in economic and social life.

The Mouvement Démocrate belongs to the European Democratic Party (EDP) and advocates deepening European integration .

Election results

In the first round of the 2007 parliamentary election , the party received 7.6 percent of the vote, and in the final round it was able to bring three members to the National Assembly. In 2012 , MoDem received only 2.3 percent of the vote in the first round of voting. In the second round, two mandates were won. Previously, Bayrou achieved 9.1 percent (1st ballot) in the presidential election on April 22, 2012 , after 18.6 percent in 2007, a disappointing result. In the 2017 general election , MoDem joined an electoral alliance with the En Marche! from Emmanuel Macron, whose presidential candidacy had previously been supported. MoDem achieved 4.1% of the vote in the first ballot and won 42 seats in the second ballot.

Bogus employment affair

In June 2017, the MoDem politician François Bayrou , Deputy Prime Minister ( Ministre d'État , "Minister of State") and Minister of Justice in Prime Minister Édouard Philippe's cabinet, Minister of Defense Sylvie Goulard and Assistant Minister for European Affairs Marielle de Sarnez announced a bogus employment affair in their Party announced their resignations. It is suspected that MEPs' employees were actually being used for party tasks. Preliminary investigations were initiated by the French judiciary.
