Nathalie Griesbeck (born May 24, 1956 in Metz ) is a French politician ( UDF , MoDem ). She was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2019 .

Life

Griesbeck studied at the University of Metz , where she graduated in 1979 with a maîtrise in public law. She then obtained a Diplôme d'études approfondies (DEA) in public law (1980) and legal history (1981) from the University of Nancy . Then Griesbeck worked as a lecturer ( Maître de conférences ) for public law at the University of Metz. Griesbeck is a colonel in the Air Force Reserve.

As a member of the civil union pour la démocratie française (UDF), Griesbeck was elected to the Metz municipal council in 1983. From 1988 to 2015 she was a member of the General Council of the Moselle department , where she represented the canton of Metz-3 . From 1987 she was deputy mayor of Metz, from 1995 to 2004 first deputy mayor Jean-Marie Rausch , responsible for the city's finances and economic development. From 1995 to 2001 she also headed the Office for the Construction and Administration of Social Housing (OPAC). In the General Council of the Moselle department from 2001 to 2004, she chaired the Committee on Social Affairs, Schools, Universities and Research.

She has been President of the Moselle Family Council since 2004. From 2005 Griesbeck was a member of the UDF Executive Committee, from which the Mouvement démocrate (MoDem) emerged in 2007 . In the 2008 local elections, Griesbeck ran as a candidate for the mayor's office in Metz, but received only 14.7% of the vote. In her party's national executive office, Griesbeck is responsible for justice and freedoms. She was part of the François Bayrous campaign team in the 2012 presidential election .

Activities as MEPs

In the 2004 European elections , Griesbeck was elected to the European Parliament for the UDF in the constituency of Eastern France . There she belonged to the group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). From 2004 to 2009 she was a member of the Budget Committee and delegate for relations with Mercosur (common market in South America). From 2009 to 2019 she was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and a delegate in the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly . She was also the Chair of the Special Committee on Terrorism from 2017-18 . Griesbeck was involved in the scandal about the bogus employment of MoDem party employees as assistants in the EU Parliament. She then decided not to run again in the 2019 European elections .

Awards

Griesbeck is knight of the Order for Services to Education ( Palmes académiques ) and Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite .
